I live in Colorado but my folks are down in Deming, NM. I travel back and forth more often than the wife likes!! I am retired and she still has a few years to work. Other than a wedding that I have to attend in mid March, I should be free to play both in NM and CO.

What is it's destination after SF? Where's the next transfer point?

Ofreen, in ID, and curemode, UT are both about the same distance from the Bay area, at least as the crow flies. Matt's suggestion of a hand-off at Winnemucca would be about midway.

SF>Reno 250 miles via Superslab
Reno > Winneucca , 164 miles, Superslab.

Total 414 miles one way, about 7 hrs if nonstop (yawn). And probably twice that time (though much more interesting if weaving through gold country & Tahoe) if not using Superslab.

Is there an allotted time? How much fun is allowed?

If GZ is heading north from LA, I can carry him north bound no problem. But I can't see myself riding for 7 hrs though.

LA freeways suck, numb me after an hour ride. Or that my bike needs carb resync to lessen vibration....

I generally budget 5-6 hours actual riding time per day, which translates to 200-300 miles, depending on the roads, the number of rest-stops, etc.

yes, we will not be super slabbing him from Santa Barbara to San Francisco (nor mailing the poor lil' fellow). Taking the 1 is the plan. Will take a bit longer but a much nicer ride. Matt and his crew can meet us before San Francisco as there are a lot of beautiful places for a handoff. Depending on the timing of this I can get him (with other volunteers from LA) to at least the Santa Cruz/Monterrey area and hopefully further.

GoldArrow what is the furthest you have ridden mile wise comfortably? The fellows always like to do these things in one fell swoop (I prefer to make it into two days 1 up there and 1 to return)

Embarrassed to say but the furthest I have ridden is 50 miles to Oxnard

this is my first time ever doing this relay ride. I could probably try to go as far as Santa Maria or San Luis Obispo, and head back to LA, if my bike would make it up there anyway. Also I think I can only afford to do this as a day trip, not overnight.

The alloted time at this point is how much time we allot ourselves. I can make this a 4 day trip w/o jeopardizing work and relationship TOO much and my schedule is very flexible so any day four days are fine w/ me. Assuming a delivery to the Bay Area from the Wind Goddess, that would mean an easy, non-slab ride out to meet those guys somewhere in NV, MAYBE as far as Utah. If we need to pick up Godzilla in Santa Cruz or Monterey or points south that will eat up at least a day. Any ideas on a fun route?

Formative stage route planning, just to get some ideas exposed...

I'm still looking. But, Hwy 88 looks intriguing. At least from the foot hills through gold country across to Carson city looks interesting.
I can't see much fun going across the big valley, the roads are all straight, mostly defined by farm land parcel boundaries... and flat. Still, I suppose the countryside has more visual interest and mental activity than freeway trucking. Farmers often leave odd things in view from the roadway.

Still looking for a fun way to get to 88 (Stockon-ish) from the bay area. Any chance we could get a hand off/connection in say, Hayward-ish?

It seems most of the fun roads run along the mountain/hill ridges NW/SE, rather than our intended direction NE/SW.

Nevada side roads are all foreign to me. First look seems to make avoiding 80 a dim prospect. I suppose its a matter of how adventurous/time conserving one wants to be.

FYI, I'm not much into camping out these days. So, it will be motel stops daily for me. Is fuel stop planning 100-150 miles reasonable for others on this route??

I'll have some more time later today to make refinements from reactions. Is this trip section only Fatmatt and me?

Four days R.T. sounds about right to me.

Looking at the map, would it work for you to meet up with gold, then continue on and pick-up Apexxn and moosh?

Anybody within riding distance of Rosamond, CA: Big Jay has once again offered to host a meet and greet at APE headquarters, located at Willow Springs Raceway. This may include a tour of the shop, as well as a possible lap around one of the tracks!!!! (NO hot laps!)

I think I will pass on Rosamond this year. But I am in with Sal/GreenHornet for the ride to San Francisco via the 1 (leaving on a Friday is great for me). I can meet up with the other LA riders (since their are actually some this year

after they leave Willow Springs if that works out for them.

That all sounds about right to me. I think that is pretty much what we did the first year. Surprisingly, that long flat stretch in NV heading up to Carson City was actually pretty fun. Good weather, pleasant scenery and good company. Heading over the pass south of Tahoe was BRUTALLY cold so the warm weather at lower altitude was greatly appreciated but it does get cold early in the high desert out there. I need to find some proper cold weather gloves before we do this. Maybe take the 50 from Carson City out to Fallon and then up to the 80. From there 80 won't be too bad, it mostly just sucks from SF to Reno, after that it mellows out.
Motel stops are cool w/ me, too. I love camping but it's gonna be cold out there.
I think I've recruited another rider to come along. I sold the Antares Blue 75CB750F that I rode last year to a buddy of mine and he sounds pretty stoked on the idea.
Frequent fuel/refreshment stops are a good thing. Let's plan so that we don't have to hurry/rush/push it at all. Looks like I'll probably be continuing my tradition of riding a relatively untested project bike this year so there will be inevitable unplanned rest stops plus I have no idea how far I'll make it between fill ups w/ my slightly decreased capacity fuel tank.
The first year I did Pacifica to (I think) Fernley, NV in one long day that included a lot of standing around waiting so a 4 day round trip to Winnemucca should be pretty mellow.

I love the timing (no rain at that time of year). I'm in San Diego, so if those coming from the east want to come through here I could carry the mail up to meet the LA riders. If not I will get the bike to LA and ride with the group as far as Santa Barbara or maybe SLO, depending on the days of the week we're talking about.

Pat at APE here and I'm good for reptile transit from Rosamond towards the coast to meet up with Mooshie and then ride some north bound. I'm free to ride Friday-Sunday but have to be back in time to work Monday early... Or if it works out to be another direction I can help there also. This year I want to tag along vs watching you all ride away.
