That's a jackshaft setup to transfer motion from the gear lever to the gear selector shaft. Used to occasionally see jackshaft setups back in the 1970s on MXers with long travel rear suspensions to move the sprocket closer to the swingarm pivot to minimize changes in chain tension. Eventually engine makers changed the location of the countershaft sprocket coming out of the engine case making these wacky setups superfluous. Don't see them too often for shift linkages. Typically seen on H-Ds and customs choppers where people are looking to do things differently for the sake of being different.

Lots of extra unnecessary weight, plus the slack in the chain would require a lot of extra movement of the shift lever. This is a perfect case of form over function, IMHO.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

I didn't even notice the tires, Mick. I guess I was trying to imagine speed-shifting a 750 with a sloppier mechanism than a well worn 1971 CZ 250. :o  (For those of you that are not familiar with CZ, they used a sliding plate instead of the more common rotating shift drum. The 1-2 shift required about 4" of movement at the toe piece of the shift lever. ;D

Unique. Cool. Functional? I'm sure it'd work but depends on how you'd want to shift.

At least you guys spelled Feat correctly. I can dig up an album maybe if you want to know the name. Think I have one anyway.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Time Loves a Hero was a great album.  Every song is a hit in its own right.

"Hi Roller" has lots of power
"Time Loves a Hero" speaks the truth
"Rocket in My Pocket" finger in the socket!
"Day at the Dog Races" incredible instrumental, I use this one for demonstrating hi-fi stereos it's that good
"Old Folks Boogie"
"Red Streamliner"
"New Delhi Freight Train"
"Keepin' up With the Joneses" don't try you'll just end up with heartache
"Missin' You" classic love song

The stock 1970 CB350 Honda was just as bad.
They called it the "William,Bryans Jennings" Linkage. (Long winded congressional speakers)

Most owners got rid of it.
