What? No VIN? !!
« on: February 18, 2013, 01:08:14 PM »
On an early 70's vintage TL250 where is the VIN?   The frame has been checked everywhere without removing parts and nothing is visible.  Bike is in good shape and does not appear to have had any frame or other retoration work as it all looks original.  I think it is a 1974.

Thank you   :o

Probably a period replacement frame. Probably not rebuilt by a dealer hence no stamp.
Or it's a super-rare factory prototype... ;)

Why wouldn't the dealer just restamp the frame to match old frame or title?

I posted earlier about the vin but think I was wrong and found this picture clearly showing a vin plate and its location.

If the serial numbers are present, here’s where to look:

If the frame was replaced by a dealer they should have. (Although there's always exceptions.)
However, it is possible a PO just bought a new frame and rebuilt the bike and the frame never got stamped.
Others here have reported similar occurrences of frames lacking numbers. Some states will title to the engine vin.
Or it's a rare factory prototype.   ;)

OK, my bad.  The bike is a 1974 XL250.  NOT a TL.  Sorry about that.  Anyway, problem is still the same.  Not much info available on history but the location near tripple tree where these are usually stamped shows nothing.  Does not look like a repaint job that covered it.  Since I have no history info I cannot tell where it was last registered.

Thank you all for your responses.  Hopefully someone will have another idea based on this model-change info.

Well, it’s still the same story just with a different model. :-\
The frame serial number *should* be stamped on the left side of the neck as shown in the CMSNL diagram link below. Any XL250 owners on the forum?

http://www.cmsnl.com/search/index.php?spbmbrand=HO&spbmmodel=xl250&spbmvin=

The OP’s missing riveted data plate located on the right side of the frame would look like this example:

So is that to say that the gas tank has to be removed to see it?  Have not removed anything from the bike yet but all other Hondas owned have it in plain site.

Thank you all for your responses.
