what lube do you use to put on new hand grips
« on: February 20, 2013, 12:55:03 AM »
hello there
I was going to put new hand grips on and then thought about when we were kids we would use hair spray to put new grips on our push bikes.
What about these days now. Is there a better option than hair spray.
Thanks for your time

For future reference, I use window cleaner.  The alcohol in it makes it evaporate shortly after getting the grips on and prevents turning on the bar.  Plus, it's cheap and less toxic than most of the other chemicals you keep in your garage.

I give my grips a shot of compressed air when putting them on. I use compressed air when removing them as well provided the PO hasn't glued them on.

I still use hair spray, got it at the dollar store.
There is a specialty product, Cycle Gear offered to sell to me when I bought the grips, about $6, no thanks.

What grips did you use? I like Pro Grips.

G'day Stevo
I used a grip called "super bike". Way softer than the original grips that were on the bike.
I've not tried these before but at $30 I hope they are good

I've been using the same can of Aquanet I stole from my wife about ten years ago.  It looks kind of funny in the drawer with all the other cans of spray lube and gasket stripper. ;D

Alcohol. Evaporates quick and clean. Pour a bit in the grip, put your thumb over the end(s), shake it, pour it into the other grip. Shake it again to get the extra out, and slip it on. Should give you a few seconds of super slick to move it around, and then it dries and you're golden. Works great on anything flexible, like the Ouri bike grips I had on my 550 :D

After seeing this, I wish I hadn't bought the grip glue at the dealership.  Although I'm sure it will be a long time before I try to take them off, does anyone have a tip for removing them?

But, it isn't actually necessary to use compressed air, though it does make it easier/faster.  A few drops of dish soap and water in a sprayer, aids both installation and removal, as well as technique.

Knife for removal after glue, cutting them into strips.
...This way the dealer can sell you new grips and more grip glue!   Helps the economy.  Thanks for your donation!  ;D

I've got what they called "sport grips" which is basically a firm foam/sponge type grip very similar to the grips on my kids cbr and all it did was soak up the soapy water before it had a chance to do anything so I looked it up online and spotted a vid of someone installing them with compressed air and it worked like a dream. I don't know if it would work with every grip style available but I found out it does work with firmer vinyl/rubber type grips as well. It's just another method to consider.

I use P-80 Rubber Assembly Lube. Works great with everything from grips to footpegs. It's made specifically for installing rubber; it acts as a very slippery lube so that the parts slide on easily, but after a few minutes the carrier evaporates and the grips are on like they're glued. It's used by the automotive industry and others for installing rubber parts on the assembly line. Very cheap, and just a little dab will do ya' so it lasts a long time.

Just adding one more method to those already mentioned here!
