1971 750 K1 fork boots
« on: February 20, 2013, 10:15:31 AM »
Hi all,

I'm new to the forum so I apologize in advance if this is a redundant topic. I've searched and go ogled but I just can't find the information I am looking for.
I am trying to install my fork boots.
Does anyone have an easy trick to install the upper collard to the boot?

Thanks
JOS

Are you talking about the chrome ring?  I had the same issue last summer.  Take a look at the link

If you're talking about the fork boots/gators onto the fork ear then it's just pure use of force to get it into place.  It took me a while.

Keep in mind there is a top and bottom to that gator. That lip on the inside of the gator top has to fit snug into the recess of the fork ear. Welcome to the forums. Click the pic to enlarge it.

Done this job 3 times and it was an arse of a job each time. BUT it was easiest for me the last time when I did a full bike rebuild - I mounted the gaitor onto the fork ear OFF the bike. Then I was able to fit the combined ear and gaitor on by sliding down the fork. Bottom of gaitor just prises over the fork - with some persuading with a flat but not sharp screwdriver.

And with all rubber bits, especially the old ones, a heat gun makes the rubber a lot easier to work with  ;)
