Stripped Idle Jet CB500
« on: February 23, 2013, 01:28:40 AM »
When I first bought my bike, I rebuilt the carbs. When I removed the idle jet from one of the carbs, it took little to no effort to unscrew it and it just fell out.

Along with the jet, fell out a tiny, thin piece of metal which was wrapped around the jet's threads. I'm assuming it was placed there by the PO to reach and grab what was left of the stripped threads.

I shrugged and "screwed" it back in. The bike ran fine when I bought it, and still runs good to this day.

So, the question is: Do they make heli-coil (or similar) inserts that small and in that size/pitch? I'm assuming I can't tap and die a size larger as that would mean I would also need a jet with custom threads.

It's just one of those problems I'd like to eliminate from troubleshooting. Every time I hear a strange sound or the idle is off I can't help but wonder if the jet is just sitting at the bottom of the fuel bowl. I have an extra bank of carbs, but I'd really like to leave them alone and not swap one for one.
