650 cam installation 550 engine
« on: February 28, 2013, 05:37:58 PM »
I have a 650 cam I'm planning on installing in my 550 but my bike has an electronic ignition that covers up the timing marks where the points used to be.

So my question is how do I install my cam properly without those marks?

remove the plate and time the cam.  reinstall and reset ignition timing.

Show us a picture of what you have.  My 650 cam went in without taking my Dyna S off the bike...

There must be a window to see marks in order to time the ignition.

'79-'82 were all SOHC4, with the same cam, except the German model. You do not want the German cam, it was lower HP.

Sorry for the delay, this is what my ignition looks like. Don't know a lot about these ignitions, it was installed by the PO

I guess it needs to come off there for me to time the cam. I've never done anything like this, so any tips or links to helpful threads are appreciated! Thanks

dont remove the larger outer black main body, remove the centre nut and see if it has the marks still behind it.
