'76 550 - have extra pieces after carb clean?
« on: February 26, 2013, 09:21:25 PM »
I'm a new owner and new to bikes, but had to clean my CB550's carbs.  I noticed I have these pieces lying around.  Any idea where they go?  I checked everything and all the valve and chokes open smoothly.  Thanks  :'(

From left to right:

1.  One of eight springs for the lifters (2 per carb)
2. Dark but looks like pin between #2 and #3 that throttle return spring attaches to.
3. Goes with #1 in contact with ball joint from lifter arm or bracket/plate
4. My guess would be slide washer, where slide attaches to lifter arm. Also check the 8 cap screws.

Another reason not to separate carbs unless absolute necessary. Personally I've never needed to separate them and have always done the maintanance with carbs on the rack.

could you kindly tell me what the lifter spring is you're referring to? :) i found #4 and i'm not sure #2 is necessary, but im not sure what you're referring to for that as well.

do i absolutely need to put these back on? Haha  :-[

Yes you do, otherwise they wouldn't be there in the first place.  ;)

The parts you're picturing come from the synch adjusters - they're not listed individually on this fiche, but are included among the parts indicated by #29. Pull one of your intact adjusters apart and you'll see what I mean.

#2 appears to be the inlet valve, #4 is the float and pivot; def needed or your carbs will not work. The Honda engineers didn't spend a lot of time just making up parts to confuse people with; all of the parts are absolutely necessary for the bike to function!

If you're confused as to what parts go where, I'd be concerned about the level of your rebuild.   :o

Having blown up your picture the spring and both black bits appear to be out of a sync adjuster, one black bit is the fixed seat for the ball and the other the sprung seat. If you look closely both have a curved indentation

The last bit is a spring washer and without it whatever it should be on will fall off
