I've been using 90W gear oil lately, since I had an extra bottle of it laying around for a while. Brush it on when the chain is warm, wipe off the excess with a rag, and there's no fling-off. The chains have been staying a lot cleaner, too. That spray-on sticky lube just ends up collecting a lot of dirt and sand.

There was a post many moons ago where someone was using WD40 to clean the chain.

Any updates? or have the "o" rings perished.

So far the following have been suggested:

Pro Honda White Graphite Chain Lube
motor oil
chain wax
lithium grease
car posi traction rear end oil
90W gear oil

My question is can all the above be use for O-ring chains?

With the Scottoiler they supply their own 'oil', which apparently is ATF. If it gets really hot this tends to be a bit runny so I use whatever oil I have lying around.

good grief i can't believe this thread is still going.

i haven't used it, but my buddy with the triumph sprint has a ScootOiler and swears by it. this guy puts about 18k/year on his bike and i think said he got around 10k out of the last chain. he just uses 10w30 or whatever oil he has kicking around. whenever he's getting ready to park, he'll give it a squirt or two at around 10-15mph.

Well Chain Wax will not work for me since I am using a NON O Ring Chain. What I found was that the spray lubes were too thin to either stay in the rollers or broke down two quickly. The POSI Fluid is a Hypoid oil and sticks to surfaces under pressure. I needed to brush it on all around the chain and drip off. If I had an O Ring chain and all I needed was to prevent surface rust, chain wax would be fine.

Well I have a non-oring and no issues. But then not every brand is the same. Just as there are different brands of oil that while the same weight do not work the same.

A friend of mine had some motorcycle chain o-rings sitting in some WD-40 for about 5 years and nothing happened to them. They didn't swell or crack or anything. In fact, they stayed pliable right up until he said, 'ok, enough with this,' and dumped the whole thing out.

at any rate, all wax/oil/wd40/chicken grease debates aside, i have a question on behalf of a friend.

how often do you o-ring people use whatever you're using?
with my non o-ring chain, i usually lube it about once every week or two which translates to 300-400 miles, more or less. is it pretty much the same, can you go longer?

With any 'automatic' oiling system (Scottoiler, Loobman or whatever) the chain is constantly kept moist with whatever oil you use, so in effect the chain is being constantly attended to. All you have to remember is to keep the lubricant reservoir full.

I have a J.C.Whitney non o ring chain and sprockets, call me "frugal". but have no problems at all Ive adjuster it 2 times in 10,000 miles....A good dousing with Bel-Ray at every other fill up does the trick....just be careful the next 10 left turns till the snot wears off the tire

I lube once a week, around 300-500 miles.

Two things are scaring me right now;
1. This man's obsession with Scottoiler.
2. People lube-ing their chain every WEEK, and claiming their chain doesn't get dirty with product X.. $:-\$

Perhaps I'm an idiot, but i've driven 2000 miles the last 2 weeks, and I really see no need to oil my chain just yet. If it's clean and lubed I leave it alone. And don't tell me anything about weather and temperature, cause it's been raing here non stop too.

This may be the dumbest question ever, but, what about bar and chain oil for a chainsaw? Worthless? I'm not using it but I have half a bottle of it that's been sitting in my garage for about 4 years. I don't have a chainsaw anymore and I can't just throw it out.

As long as it won't affect the O-rings (if you have an O-ring chain) go for it. If it is particularly runny you may find that there is a lot of fling-off, though.

Motul Chain Lube Road is a very good chain wax for all type of chains.
