Team 2 - MS, LA, AR, OK, TX - 2013 Rally
« on: February 23, 2013, 02:22:26 PM »
Mad Mt of Team 1 will kick off this years Rally in Daytona in Mid March.
From there, looks like Zilla will head north to GA, and then west to AL?

Need a MS rider to meet up with Team 1 at some point, TBD.

Calling all Team 2 riders....

I'm trying to contact LA riders.  Wat-a-farmer is coming to
Lake Travis so that's as far west as you have to go.

I rode from Birmingham to Jackson, MS (year 1) and Birmingham to Hattiesburg (year 2) but have tentatively planned to pick up GZ somewhere in Georgia and bring him back to Alabama this year.  Hopefully we will pick up some more riders to make the connection from Birmingham to MS.  Still waiting to see how it all shapes up!

Just wanted everyone to know, I am really looking forward to this year's relay!  Also, I just posted on the main forum page, a plea from the heart, to try to get more forum members to sign up and participate in some way to the 2013 relay!  Cheers everybody!     Justin, What-a-farmer Justin (jcarthel)

Hey guys, I think some of the uncertainty at this time has to do with the hand-off between teams.  With that in mind, I am posting my comments in both team 1 and team 2 area. The below was posted in team 1 earlier tonight.

Hi guys,
I have been looking at the maps and the locations of the riders so far.  So, madmtnmotors (Wilbur) is coming north from Daytona to meet up with fivestring who seems to be in Nashville, GA (let's just say Tifton to avoid confusion with Nashville, TN).  Bender01 is in Savannah, and bluto and k3owner are in the Atlanta/Douglasville area respectively.  I am in Birmingham, and currently the next rider to the west is in Houston, Tx (motocyconomad), then two riders in Austin (Stev-o and Pecantree), then jcarthel in Lubbock, TX.

It seems to me that if we connect the dots, the path is Daytona, Tifton, Savannah, Atlanta, Birmingham, Houston.  Austin, Lubbock.

If that is the way it works out, I just need to find out where to meet the Atlanta guys.  Then I can coordinate with motocyconomad for a handoff to him.  I think the guys in Austin have already figured out from there continuing west.

Anyway, if no one else signs up between Birmingham and Houston, I can meet motocyconomad somewhere around Slidell or Natchez, maybe  Baton Rouge.

I am open to ideas, but wanted to start to clarify the path so that everyone knows what to expect.  So, with that in mind, I thought I'd throw something out and see what everyone else is thinking.

Let's get this thing organized, tomorrow is March 1, 2013.  Kickoff in roughly ONE WEEK.  Yeaaah!

I have posted in team 1 that it might be possible that I could ride to Birmingham and then MS and LA and up to my house in Van Buren AR.  then maybe Roach Carver, TaxiScooter and Zeek and I can head south into OK then back through AR into LA and into TX if you Austin guys could meet us somewhere .   I am not sure that is needed but if we get no one to make the hook up in Bama I think I could do it depending on the days ....

I would not be able to make that meet up and Pecantree is on a job in FL, not sure when he will be back.
Haven't heard from the Dallas guys yet, but April tax time is bad for CBGhia (Joe met you two years ago).
We have multiple Houston riders who will most likely ride up to the Austin area for some great roads in the Hill Country, so zilla could go to them first.
OK could get ridden on the way back east.

So, you guys have OK covered? I question marked it in Team 4 and I can remove that if so.

Would it be better if GZ entered TX a week or two later?
Jerry, what was the date when you and the CO boys braved the blizzard the first year?

Hi Coke,
I posted after you in team 1.  I can take the handoff in Birmingham then work out a time to meet you in Arkansas so that you can go toward OK, TX, etc.

I did mention that this year I will be riding an '80 CBX rather than my '74 750 due to issues with the swingarm.  I will bow out, or ride along with someone on a SOHC if that bothers anyone.  But as I pointed out to team 1, there have been suggestions of sending GZ by UPS to some destinations.  I would contend that riding on a CBX isn't nearly as bad as riding a brown truck.  Nevertheless, I would like to put this out in the open now rather than later.

Bottom line, I'll be glad to meet at Barber for the GA to AL handoff and would also like to make the trek west to meet someone either in AR or LA.  Seems at this time that Coke in AR is the most likely handoff scenario.

Scottly - add OK here, I removed it from Team 4.

I do believe the Great Rocky Mountain Continental Divide Pass Blizzard of 2011 was the first weekend of May. That would indicate the Great Colorado High Plains Blizzard of 2011 was the following week just a couple days after 100 degrees in KS.

I posted this over in the FL, GA/Coastal planning thread, but want to keep you guys in the loop:

Not sure, Bluto, if you want to hand it off to me but my services are available. I can still take the little monster out to Birmingham for a quick drop off at Barber. I hear Cheaha is nice this year and have never been there.

The 550K3 is at the ready. Let me know. Anyone want to come along? Looks like about 360 round trip.

Marc

Hi Marc,

Just keep the communication flowing, we will plan to meet up at Barber.  From there the Bham group will head West to MS, LA, or AR.  At this point I think we are going to meet Coke for the next handoff.

Glad to hear your interested, haven't heard from the DFW riders yet.
Which weekend in April works or you? I'm pretty flexible at this point.
Let's hook up at the Moto GP too, if your coming up.

Hey, hey, Steve-O!  We will be there for MotoGP - are you going?  We'll be sitting at Turn 15, as well as wandering all around the track.  The weekends other than MotoGP (April 18-21) work.  And the Houston Art Car Parade weekend is out, too (May 11), for us.

Probably/chances are, but you NEVER know until then. 70 today in eastern CO and snow coming Sat. Last time in 2011 it was 100 in KS then on the way back a blizzard 2 days later the second week. I may be back east on a long ride the last part of May too.

Hey Chris - yes, I'll be at Moto GP, let's hook up.  I'll be at the track this weekend, my brother is racing SCCA and I am crew.  Get this - they are having a "walk the track" Sat morning before racing and we'll be riding bikes on an F1 track!! (taking my little smokin RD350).

Would April 26-28th or May 3-5th work for the Rally?

Again, in the interest of keeping everyone informed - from the Team 1 site:

what does the hook up to the Houston group look like.  Is that set or do I need to make a run to Mississippi?

Thanks
Coke,

Still not seeing anyone signed up in MS.  Plus we haven't finalized the date for the lizard to get to Birmingham.  So no definite plans with respect to dates at this time.

Anyway, I could probably make Hot Springs, AR for a hand-off.  I have never been there but a hot soak sounds inviting after 400 plus miles, so that could be a good destination.  That would let us check off MS too as my route would take me through Tupelo.
