New swingarm zerks...
« on: February 25, 2013, 05:41:15 PM »
So, I *finally* got my swingarm rebuilt with new bronze bushings and I tapped and replaced the zerks with nifty metric ones that fit a standard grease gun.

My question before I pump it full of Mobil1 is this: The fittings seem to have a little ball in the hole that looks like a one-way valve. I thought the idea was that you pump on one end and force the old grease out the other (which would be a real problem with one-way zerks on each end). Am I mistaken?

The idea is you pump the living crap out of it til it doesn't take anymore. If you cleaned it, which I'm assuming you did as part of the job I wouldn't worry about it.

Put you are supposed to "regrease" every 3k miles, right? Surely you don't take the swingarm off and clean it and then pump in more?

No they don't work that way.  Clean out all the old grease before you put it all together and then add the new grease.  When you grease them at the recommended interval you will notice that as you add the new it will force older grease out around the end of the bushing/ tube/ rod but it won't come out the zerk.

The two sides of the bolt aren't connected and greasing one side does nothing for the other; you have to grease each side seperately. Like they said ^^, add grease until the old stuff comes out at the swingarm end cap, then do the same to the other side.

And, at least on the older ones, the hole goes all the way through the bolt so IN THEORY grease pumped in one end ought to lube both bushes ---but it don't and the service interval is 1500 miles by the way

I'm basing my experience on a '74 CB550 bolt, but I'm sure the '75 "K" model is the same. The bolt isn't drilled through and, as I mentioned, needs to be greased from both sides.

In theory, you could pump enough grease into one side to fill the collar, but why not just do it the right way?

With the amount of pinching and twisting I did to get those things on there, I really cringe at the thought of calling them nipples.
