This little thing is mounted in rubber just above the regulator on a K8.

So what is it? Two wires go to it. One is dark green with red stripe. Second wire is light green with red stripe.

No. That is behind this thing and I just replaced the old flasher with a new one.

OK a starter safety diode. So a diode has one-way continuity,  right? This thing allows flow in both direction per my dmm.  What is it's purpose?

Only if you plan to kick start only. The diode completes the ground on the starter circuit. You can take it out, but you have to supply an alternate ground.

I think you can just remove it and bridge it with a wire loop. I had mine bypassed at one stage but can't remember exactly how I did it.

im rewiring my bike...gutting everything out not needed...starter is being removed n no blinkers so anything that goes with that is going

The diode keeps the neutral light from illuminating when the clutch is pulled in, and allows the engine to electric start when either the trans is in neutral or anytime the clutch is pulled in.

You can delete it by grounding dark green/red wire. The diode is used as a way to make the neutral sensor and clutch safety switch play nicely together

Ground the green/red off the starter solenoid. You can now delete the clutch perch switch and have no ill effects

It is more a redundancy to make a bike more safe for people who don't ride or don't know basics of safe riding. Always check to see if in gear before starting, or pull in clutch. Without it someone inexperienced could really get hurt

Great answers, thanks gents. I'm leaving mine alone for now, just familiarizing myself to the details of this bike should I find myself roadside with an electrical issue.
