Grasscutter, Pinhead has suggested taking Nebraska by storm through McCook in the southwest corner then perhaps ride northern KS. You could join up at any location on the undecided as of yet routing. You guys gotta work out dates still. GZ should be moving into KS 7/20-21'ish. Sound OK to you?

K5 Keith is in on the suggested dates from Colorado Springs. Pinhead has pegged good riding from Colorado Springs to Nederland.

Hondaman is on alert depending on when his head is completed so he can finish the engine. GZ wants to help him break it in.

OldBob is good to go in Nederland. I'm thinking he'll introduce GZ to The Frozen Dead Guy, Nederlands' claim  to fame. Google him!

78 k550/Paul is good for the 20th perhaps.

CB650/Terry is............. pending  ;) and has offered camping at his place in Hudson, CO before heading off into NE and KS. Hudson is northeast of Denver along I-76.

I'm thinking we are on a roll once OldBob and Proto meet up to Relay GZ  ;D

Let's set some dates boys!
« Reply #202 on: June 26, 2013, 04:58:59 PM »
From what I can tell we are working around 7/17 to 7/19 to get outta Colorado.

OldBob and Proto will be working out their connection via CO14 from Rabbit Ears Pass just east of Steamboat to Ft Collins probably some time prior to 7/17. Stay in touch with them if you want to ride a really nice section. That will probably be separate from what I'll mention.

Let's start with Pinhead since he'll be riding the most and coming from central Kansas, loop through Colorado and then back home. Doug, thinking of these dates when can you be in Colorado Springs (that is if that's what you'd do)? I'm thinking 1 day with some GREAT mountain riding that is far from extreme from Co Spr to Nederland to Hudson. From Hudson the next day we'll nip off Nebraska and head south at McCook as Doug suggested with some Colorado riders heading back including OldBob. After that it's all in the Kansas contingent's hands as well as the se NE guys if they can join in.

If you wanted to ride to the top of 2 paved 14,000+ roads (and I'd suggest that) if would be more plausible if we knocked out 1 the afternoon before due to time constraints. Just a suggestion. Shouldn't be a problem to do the ride and include 1 in 1 day.

Route and dates sound doable for me to join Pinhead.
What's the next leg?
Pinhead on to where?  And when?

"See if work lets me" WTF?! Thought you were off Th-Fr-Sa. Those just happen to be the days we're ridin tha front range LOL. Meet us at Mt Evans and bring EVERYONE along..... or come on down to tha Springs and do both  ;D

ALSO.... we may need a rider to accompany OldBob to meet up with Proto if he can't ride is SOHC4. Those 2 guys will be working out a date and plan soon. EVERYONE please keep an eye open on that and see if you can help. That may happen prior to the 17th but both those guys are actually retired more than I am  ;D

Sweet! I'd have to leave the details up to you and Pinhead and any of the other KS guys. Up to you guys at that point  ;) I'd expect us to hit western KS 7/18 or 7/19 PERHAPS then the CO guys would probably head home. You guys could probably cover the remainder of KS by the end of the week.

Looking like Team 5 needs to get in touch to make some plans with you guys  ;D

Yup.

Team 5 needs to chime in.
If I can't make the 1st leg with Pinhead, then I'd make the second one when GZ rides to team 5.

I'll be ready to make the pickup/hand-off near the Kansas City area unless the KS riders would rather meet up in a less urban area. Feel free to PM me as needed as that's probably the best way for me to actually get notified about any plans.

So who's making the trek across the eastern half of KS?

I posted a video to the rider log thread. I was very happy to be a part of the relay this year! I hope to do it again next year. I know my girl michelle was super excited too. Even though shes not a forum member she is already talking about next year! I will either buy another sohc4 for touring or take my cb500 back to stock saddle and bars so I can rack on some mega miles :)
You guys and girls are all awesome!

COLORADO FRONT RANGE AND KANSAS RIDERS - TIME TO RIDE!!!!
« Reply #214 on: July 02, 2013, 12:11:21 PM »
Proto and OldBob are planning to get GZ v3.0 to Nederland in the next week. It's Front Range time  ;D

Let's start with Pinhead since he'll ride to CO from KS then return with GZ. Would 7/17 or 7/18 work for you? Overnight in Co Sprs then ride the next day to Nederland vis Pikes Peak &/or Mt Evans then on to Hudson for an overnight? Otherwise??

How about everyone else - how can this fit into your schedule? Ride with Pinhead and K5 Keith if he can make the dates work OR meet along the way??

From Hudson, CO it looks like McCook, NE then south into KS. Ride as much as you like or as little. Or meet up for an evenings fun and entertainment then head home. Or do as I'll do and drive the cage.

Can I get this a little more concrete?  When leaving exactly?  From where?  Staying where?....etc.
Need to know, so I can assist with this leg out of CO to KS....or the out of KS to MO leg.

Cutter,

Waiting/hoping to hear from Pinhead as he'll be making a loop from KS and back or so the idea has gone. Hoping he'll chime in soon.

Have been hoping to ride 7/17, 7/18, 7/19 from CO into KS. Overnight in/near Hudson, CO 7/17 or 7/18 before clipping off sw NE and back into KS. From there it's up to you guys and the MO guys as the CO guys will be headed home. I'll email him too, why don't you do also. He has said something about the wheat harvest and that's early dark to late dark.

How far west would you want to ride to meet up with the crew?

I can RIDE Jerry!  :)  Done many a solo cross country trip.  Would be willing to do a full 8-9hrs from where I'm @ in Omaha to meet the CO guys.
But...am ONLY available for *extended* weekends.  July: Fri.19-Sat.20-Sun.21-Mon.22  Need to be back home Monday night for work the next day.

Would prefer not just hammering out the miles.  A more leisurely ride is always preferred, but I'm 100% ready and the bike is 100% ready.

-In a previous post you mentioned ""From Hudson, CO it looks like McCook, NE then south into KS.""  McCook works great for me.

-If Pinhead can't make it, then we need someone else from KS to step up and meet me somewhere.  Otherwise I'm taking I-80 back to Omaha, (or hwy 34 east out of McCook) which will bypass all of KS.  (Haven't heard from K5 Keith @ all either.)

The weekend of the 19th is coming quick!!!!!!!
Come on!  We're burning daylight!

Ok guys it's coming together. We are connecting the dots. This is going to happen within 2 weeks.

Cutter and Pinhead are riders so this will work. Still needing the confirmation from Pinhead and his route. These guys need some priority since they'll be covering serious miles.

What about you other KS riders?? Considering Grasscutter's dates when/where can you ride?? Grasscutter WILL be on the road 7/19 and meeting GZ in McCook unless he meets up elsewhere on the way.

If necessary we could instead cut the corner of KS into McCook (vs the opposite) then Grasscutter could take I-80 but I know we have the other KS guys that can and want to ride. If that's the case then I would suggest northern KS but that's up to all you guys.

Kansas guys please step forward  ;D ;)

Funny went through McCook last year with dad.    34 is a cool ride but it was closed in yuma.  Had to detour to 36.   Somewhere there is a town called Funk.  Wanted to look around and see if someone put up a funk 49 sign.

Hey Jerry!  Got your PM.  Sounds good.

Here's a couple other details on my end.  I'll be swinging through a small town in southern NE (Fairbury) on Thursday night July 18th after work, and stay with family.

From Fairbury, NE to McCook is an easy 4 hrs.
From Fairbury, NE to Goodland, KS is an easy 5 hrs.

Sooooo....we've got options if any KS riders can meet up.
As it sits now, I'd say we stick with McCook, as pinhead seems busy and haven't heard of other KS riders ready to go.

To clarify for all others following the thread, I will be in McCook sometime around noon, Friday 7-19.  Have lunch, meet the other riders, do the hand-off, etc.  Unless the weather isn't cooperating, I'll be heading out of McCook to camp for the night @ either Red Willow lake (by McCook), or ride 2.5 hrs north out of McCook to Lake McConaughy.  (22 miles of white sand beach!)

Camp Friday night and possibly sat. night there.  Head back to Omaha on Sun 7-21.
If there are KS riders that join, I'll work out a different route into KS.

-what's the status on 2nd leg?  IE: When / where for me to hand GZIII off...?
-Following weekend 26, 27, 28 is tight.  Possibly make time for a quick 6 hr RT to Kansas City, MO?  Don't think I can do more than that, that weekend.
-Or....weekend of 8-1, 8-2, 8-3, I'm riding to Rockerbox in Milwaukee.  So that's an option too.
Come on!  We're burning daylight!

I met Dave (Proto) this morning as planned near Cameron Pass where he gave GZ to me for the trip to Ned. Dave did mention that I was the first one to transport GZ on something other than an SOHC. However, I suspect that 148 miles on a Water Buffalo didn't hurt him.

This is my first time to see GZ in person. When I saw him in a movie 40 or 50 years ago, he looked taller.

Bob

(Evidently, he had already heard about Colorado.)
