performance comparison trials
« on: March 01, 2013, 03:22:05 PM »
Ok Im going to put a fresh set of round tops and a early K cam in my 77A this spring and besides seat of the pants feel ( not accurate ) what are some of your suggestions for judging the performance increase. compare speed over some measured distance before-after or time from 40 to 80. Who has thoughts on this?  I will not likely go to the drag strip to test . Something about drag racing a stock "A" is not something I want to do

You and me both!   Although I'll be swapping over Yamaha CV carbs.

Here's my thought.  If you have or have access to a smart phone, there are apps you can buy that will measure your bikes performance (speed/acceleration, etc) - and then you could do a before/after comparison based on the data.  One example is Dynolicious ($12.99).  I've only "shopped around" for apps for five minutes - I'm sure that there are other apps that may do more and/or are cheaper.

Using this type of app, you could just measure your 0 to 60 acceleration and/or 40 to 60 (or 60 to 80)?

I have also bought a K cam, and my intent is to advance it some - for more low end torque.  Not so sure about that - we'll just have to see.  My project is slow going - by this spring I'll have a 78F front end with cb900 dual discs/brakes and black reverse comstar wheels too.

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

I have to respectfully disagree.  Minor changes are easy to capture/discern - given the right measuring tools.  The data we can get from today's tools are easily as good as (better in my opinion) that the limited data from a dragstrip.

Certainly dyno's have been used (forever?) to discern small differences.  Lately, the ability to download a speed vs. time trace to your PC/laptop - using even basic smart phones, and then overlay the data as motor changes are made can be very helpful.

I haven't used the android phone app method, but have used other in-car methods (owned a G-Tech for a while) in the past - and it worked well.
