cone air filters
« on: July 20, 2006, 06:08:58 AM »
Please recommend a good vendor for those cone-shaped air filters (official term?) for my '75 CB550F's. I'm restoring one. The other needs new air filters since those on it are too long and scrunch up against the frame on both sides. :-\

Which of these http://www.knfilters.com/universal/universal.htm, for example, are your favorite.

I'd like got get some stainless/chrome cones to match my bike.

I find the airbox a hassle :(, for example, to re-fit those rubber flanges and resecuring the box with bolts...hence a reason for liking the cones. Plus I think the cones look better. And, giving less air resistance, are sportier. no?

Also, since I'm currently away from the bike, does memory serve me that the diameter is 49 mm?

Yours,

Thanks, duh, yes a plethora.

Whoa, these look nice... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/REZTON-Stainless-Steel-Hi-Perf-Cone-Air-Filter-CHROME_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38634QQihZ020QQitemZ300008433002QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

Any recommendations on brand, and stainless/crome if possible. Yah, I know chrome'r expensive. I've just lived the last 10 years with cheapos, wanna have some niceys for now and for the Meet in Marion, OH, next Saturday.

I also want to confirm diameter, 49 mm? I'm away from the bike now and I wanna order the right cones ASAP. Also, length seems to be an issue  ;), I mean, mine too long  :D, seriously, min'are deformed by being to loong and crammed agains frame. :(

Cheers,

...those are nice...I love the stainless.  If you want the run of the mill, they are $10 a peice here.. https://www.partsnmore.com/cat_index.php?model=cb550&category=carb   FYI, shipping is free if you buy $35 or more worth of stuff...

...nice avitar...enjoy it while you can...before I we got married, my wife rode with me all the time.  In the last year 5 years shes all of a sudden become safety conscience, and won't set foot on my scoot...   ::)

From what I have read / heard , the actually K&N brand of filters are much better than the $10 run of the mill versions. Something to do with the k&n's actually being a oiled filter, and the cheapo ones being just paper.

What do I know, I run without filters ::)

Thanks. That, clearly, was our wedding send off from being married in a park in Boulder, CO. That is my 'old' '75 CB550F I am now restoring. I will eventually change the avitar to my 'new' pristine-ish 4000 mi '75 CB550F. I need to get the camera out and shoot my newer bike. It's beautiful, straight handle bars, custom paint job, non-rusty chrome.

My wife wants to learn to ride, would like to get here a '75 CB350 to start.

Cheers,

JBOX

For the 550, you have to have a particular K&N model.  99% of the ones sold on eBay etc. simply will not fit - #1 and #4 interfere with the frame.

I happen to have a complete NOS set of vintage K&N's for the 550  ;D  Complete with specific instructions on installing them, as you need to bend the choke lever slightly.  These are the real deal - original 1977 paperwork etc in the original box.  Brand new, never used.  Made in the USA  :o

I'm about to put them on eBay - if you're interested, let me know.

Hey Mark, I get back at least 2 times a year. I grew up in the tobacco so I can find my way through the
5th middles. Tobacco has pratically succumb to the PC dictates of today though.
After living in the mountains for the last 18 years I can't stand the trip during the summer,
yea, I'm getting soft.  ;)

While I'm at it, any suggestions for cone filters for the 750F2?
