Re-chroming CB400F pipes
« on: March 09, 2013, 03:34:58 PM »
I have a '75 CB400F in very good shape. I had to do some work on the bike and decided to pull the pipes off for better access to the bike. When I pulled them off, I noticed a few spots of rust through the chrome around the welds.
I've never re-chromed anything, but is that the best way to solve this problem?
Is it worth the money....I know original pipes are very sought after on this bike, so is re-chroming reducing the value? etc..
Thanks!

Most likely the rust spots you see started on the inside of the pipes. Rechroming may not stop the rust and in a short time it might be back. That being said, you may have a hard time finding anyone that is willing to rechrome a used pipe.

Browns rechromes exhaust pipes and headers.  Its not cheap, but Ive been very happy with the parts I had rechromed by them.

Super fine, 00 or 000 steel wool will do the trick.  I've shined up tons of rusty chrome, even some of the pitting will come off with work.  It's super cheap and I 100% gaurantee it will look way better after.  DO NOT USE ANYTHING BUT 00 or 000 or it will scratch the chrome

I've polished up plenty of rust pitted chrome and always used 0000 and some Marvel oil-works pretty darn good.

Also, you can indeed get used exhaust re-chromed if you get the exhaust cleaned very well beforehand (like hot tanked) and find a chrome guy that will do your exhaust just before they change out their chemical bath anyways (they can only use them for so many jobs), that way you don't ruin their expensive chemicals* with all that carbon.

(*due to disposal costs as a result of endless EPA regs 'cause Chromium is some nasty stuff)
