'84 Celica Supra
« on: March 04, 2013, 08:13:53 PM »
The great, the amazing, the chronically overheating 1984 Toyota Celica Supra! Complete top to bottom with a cracked head! HA! No matter; she was only $600 and I met a guy on the way home who has 6 parts cars so I'm in good standing.

I started tear down today and cleaned parts as I went. The gasket kit comes in tomorrow. Hopefully, by Fri. she'll be hitting the road again!

Check out my "new" valve covers! I love this kinda stuff.

As she sits tonight. Tomorrow's another day.

The only REAL trouble I've run into so far (aside from the obvious cracked head) is the lash adjusters are pretty much all stuck in the block. They all work fine, just that the lower ends are stuck. Everything else has been smooth sailing thus far! More to come tomorrow.

I forgot to add, she's the original 5m-ge engine with 122,000mi. on the clock. She has a 5-speed too!

Yeah, from what little I've gotten to drive her I can already tell that she's a torquey little girl! ;D

If you ever saw pinks (maybe it was pass time) they are two shows on speed channel where people do a 1/4 mile. Pinks they race title for title and as I remember it might have been pinks.

Anyway,on the track  it was a supra vs a camaro  or some dodge hemi type thing and the supra won.

faux, I believe it. Between the limited slip and the torque I'd imagine these wiould lay down some pretty wicked 1/4 miles!

Hey sean, don't be too jealous! After all that time spent in rebuilding her and she still overheats! I'm gonna look at the water pump tomorrow and if it's not that, I'm gonna replace the radiator.

I don't know guys, any suggestions? I've flushed the system, replaced the radiator cap, replaced the thermostat, burped the system about a million times, put a full gasket kit in (since the head gasket was blown), and checked the head to no avail. She still overheats the second I take her down the road! What's up?!?

My Acura Legend started overheating at lower speeds. The electric fan only came on when I turned the ignition off. Had a guy look at it while I was working but no luck. Turns out that the rear window defroster was not working so that had to get fixed. When that got fixed by fuse replacement the ABS light also went out. I finally found a patch of ice and the ABS was working again. The fuse was also labeled cooling fan but not ABS. That one fuse controlled the relay to all three but you'd never know it from the schematics.

So, at what speeds is it over heating? Sounds like that's why the head gasket blew and the head cracked. Does it have a gauge or just a light? My gauge went up but the light never came on and it works.

As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

So far, she's been overheating at just about any speed. This thing has a clutch fan which IS working (no, she doesn't sound like an airboat at 50), she has a gauge and I believe it's working (the puking of coolant seems to coincide with the gauge's opinion). All of my fuses are good too, the belts are tight; surely the system is airlocked still (an easy problem on these cars since the head is higher than the radiator!). I plan on pulling the water pump tomorrow and going from there. My thoughts are that it isn't circulating; especially since putting a new thermostat in seems to have made the problem worse. It's either that or she hates me.

My brother had a Supra with Recaro racing seats, found out that the year he had was very easy to steal.  His insurance company got tired of replacing the seats and wheels after it was stolen and stripped multiple times.  He did love the car, when he had it!

Carefully put your hand in the radiator, if it has cold spots you've found the problem. Also make sure nobody messed with the fan blade, it won't be the first time you blade is blowing forward instead of sucking the air into the engine compartment.

Well, it's been a while, but today I can finally say, "She is fixed!" Put in a good used radiator from a local guy with 6 parts cars. Also put in a new water pump. The old one was fine, but I figured, since I was in there anyway, why not? Car runs so cool now, the heater won't make heat! I need to put the thermostat back in to solve that one. Mechanically speaking though, she's good to go! Now, on to fixing the exhaust and body for inspection!

yeah dont run it long without a thermostat!it wont reach operating temp and you can foul the engine internally with gunk.
