Reserve tank not working
« on: March 24, 2013, 07:51:33 PM »
So a few months back, I had the inside of my tank coated to protect it from rust.  Since then, I have run out of gas because flipping my petcock switch to reserve does nothing.  I am guessing the reserve line got blocked when the tank was coated.  Any way to fix this or am I just stuck?

It's fixable: I just fixed another '77 750K tank that had the same problem. It was a little over-treated with the POR-15 stuff (maybe it was extra rusty inside?) and it blocked off the port where it drains into the petcock. That POR-15 stuff is HARD, I discovered: I had to end up running a drill bit up from below to grind it out of the way! I'm impressed with it, whatever it is, hard as plastic.  :)

So all I need to do is remove the tank, turn it upside down, and run a drill through the reserve port?

Remove your petcock and dissassemble it completely, clean it out w/ compressed air, poke around w/ a stiff wire. Sometimes the main brass tube has a crack or completely missing and results in tank always being on reserve. The packing rubber inside gets hard as a rock so get a replacement from Honda. Don't lose the phenelic washers that go on the 2 tank screws, they are special. This is info for 69-76 K models btw, the 77/78 models have a completely different petcock.
