Airbox draining oil after ride....normal?
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:57:21 PM »
On the bottom of the airbox there's a outlet next to where the breather tube connects... The air is reburned but I'm noticing some oil spots on the ground and the drain is dripping a bit... I don't have the small hose piece that connects to the bottom (the little tube with a needle sized hole...think it's called a breather tube).... Is that a vital part for reburning vapor in air box? Randomly guessing that the rubber tubing would produce higher suction and decreased dripping.... If so... Anyone know a solution how I can make one or get my hands on one?

it usually indicates blow by, OR if the relief valve is stuck it can push oil out of the top of the engine. You don't say which bike. that's important.

Like Phil said, small dripping is normall, from blowby.

re-routing the oil doesn't explain what's wrong. if you're seeing that much, something's going on there. Take a look at this diagram. If the relief valve is malfunctioning there will be an excess of pressure in the top of the head, and it'll push oil out of the breather tube. I'd also expect to see a lot of seepage around the cam cover.
getting a read of your oil pressure would be good too.
If it's blow by, it sounds like a LOT of blowby, and you may have a tired engine there.

The hose is still available from BikeBandit and is cheap, so you might as well get the real thing! it should be plugged at the tip - either the special little cap, or anything you can find to plug it with; it definitely would not be dripping oil if it's properly plugged.

If your airbox is complete, that is, if it contains all of the catch-cans and filters, then having some oil to drain is normal in that the purpose of the filters is to remove oil and water contamination from the blow-by before it's sent back through the intake. Its part of the normal maintenance procedure to drain the hose.

If this hose is left open, and your airbox isn't set up properly then you're likely developing a high pressure condition in the crankcase, which will cause oil to be forced out of the nearest available opening (the drain tube).

How would I know if a relief value is malfunctioning?

run the bike with the hose off and see how much comes out. Also, put your hand over the oil filler (dipstick) hole. If there's a lot of air pressure there, you might have a stuck relief valve.
What's the mileage? What oil weight are you using, and when was your last oil change?

I'd say get your airbox properly routed and set-up before you move into more obscure solutions.

I'm curious as to how you're "testing" the new drain tube. What did you use to plug it with?

You didn't overfill, did you? Try having the oil halfway the dipstick and report back please.

dipstick was showing half way between two points but ill recheck again with it settled.... Notice with this bike that it is very sensitive about oil amount.... Too much and shifting into neutral from first is extremely difficult ..... Just right and it shifts with ease....

This may be completely unrelated but after I changed the oil filter I realized that there wasn't a spring present in the filter housing (spring that pushes the filter to the base)
