Testing the oil pressure light at the sending unit
« on: March 06, 2013, 03:12:38 PM »
I replaced a faulty oil sender but in the process I broke the blue wire that goes to the sender.  I fixed the wire but I’m questioning whether the splice is good.
I’m assuming if I ground the blue wire going to the sender then the oil light should go on and I’ll know if the splice is good.  Is this right?
I was to chicken to try it. I didn’t want to just rush in & ground it to the frame and wind up frying something (like me).

I think if the sender light and gauge is working it should come on when you first turn the key and then turn off.

Yes, if you ground the blue with a red stripe, it should light the oil indicator.

I would assume that if you just turn the key to the on position without starting the engine the light would come on confirming you have got the connection correct.

The oil light stays on until a moment after start up when oil pressure develops on both my bikes.

Standard workshop test for the oil light system is to disconnect the lead from the sender unit and ground it with the ignition on, if the bulb lights with it grounded and goes out with it not grounded all the wiring and bulb are OK. If the light then stays on all the time when connected to the sender and the engine running you either have an oiling problem or a bad sender---Hope for the latter as its way cheaper

All of this is good info ONLY if you have tested the oil pressure light bulb first.
If the bulb is not working all other tests are of no value.
