1 spoke pulled through hole. Trash the rim?
« on: March 07, 2013, 11:34:23 AM »
Hey All,

When I went to sandblast my K8 rims, I found 1 hole on the rear that was large enough to pass the nipple. I did not notice this when I disassembled the rim. I have drilled the holes larger, as I put the larger gauge Buchanan's spokes in there about 12 years ago.

So, do I trash the rim? Or would a high strength steel cone washer of the appropriate size be the ticket to avoid excess expenditure while remaining safe?

Thanks,

Gonzo

Curious to hear what others will say...
But I put thousands of miles on a rim that's missing 2 spokes... no problems.
All of the other spokes are solid and good.

... but ... rereading your post ...
if one hole was big enough to pass a nipple... and you drilled the holes....
I'd be worried about all of 'em.

In MHO trash it, I wouldn't want to suggest anything different as I would feel guilty if you took my advice and ended up killing yourself as a result. :o

Is your life worth less than $600?  I think not.  Do the right thing and buy a set of shiny new rims from some manufacturer and relace some new shoes.  If one hole is rusted or worn enough to pull through, how many of the others are just about there?  In order to put cone washers in the hole under question you have to remove the rubber so you are halfway there.   8)

Many rims use washers, it should work.Do you think that. Hole may be bigger than the rest....
If 40 spokes carry 800 lbs..its only 20lbs per hole..

A conical type washer can be used but it already seems like you are leaning towards moving on from that rim

If you are always gonna be worrying about it why not pick up  DSS wheel, they have a US site now

Same here one was gone when I bought it a few years ago. The nipple is there but no spoke.
Just by the fact of you posting this leads me to believe it will be on your mind every time you go over 60. You know what to do ;)

It used to be on my mind... but after such an abundance of miles (10,000ish) and checking all of the remaining spokes many times.... (fine) .... not too worried about it anymore. :)
