A good friend of mine, Joe Stamp of Memphis TN, recently got creemed by a car...he ended up with 2 fused vertebrae and is gonna lose one leg below the knee. I wish Joe had been wearing a full body helmet and/or had access to medical insurance.

Either hit could have/should have killed me. Yes, I had just put my helmet on about 15 minutes prior to this due to a thunderstorm coming up. The first hit was the van hitting me head on and the second was me flying through the air after bouncing off the front of the van and landing head first on the ground. Date of accident 8/8/~~2012~~. Corrected 8/8/2002.

Your friend holding your neck would likely die in an accident, they found that the non DOT or forged DOT half helmets and the like tend to rotate in an impact and that ends up causing you to snap your neck up high... Ugly stuff.

My crash wasn't as intense as Jerry's. 20-25mph max, it sure did make a big "WHUMP" sound though. Regardless without a helmet I'd still be in the hospital.

I guarantee that had I not been wearing a full face helmet my face would have gotten torn up.

Yeah, somewhere. I had the wrong date though 8/8/2002. That old van was totalled as was the bike but I like my replacement much better.

The bike rolled beneath the van. Funny thing, I was never 'tested' for a concussion. They must have just assumed. I was riding maybe 35mph?? Happened fast. I remember freeze frame slo mo 3 clicks and it seemed he was 100 yards away but he was right on my ass. My left arm snapped and it blew out my wrist. Glad I'm right handed as the claw isn't as good as it was before but I'm alive. Took out 5 ribs and my left heel was cracked and crushed when it slammed down. Just another weather predictor nowadays. Ripped up my hamstring some.

Blue makes a good point for you. He crossed into my lane and took me out after I saw his front wheels lock up. Hit me where the troopers are standing. Obvious it was his fault. I received a new bike and his insurance limit without an attorney.

The guy holding my neck was an EMT riding somewhere closely behind. The guy in the teal shirt was an EMT also and he was first on the scene and had my arm splinted before the crew arrived. I was out for a few minutes.

I had my helmet on today especially with all the pea size gravel still on the roads from the snows but I do not always wear it. I was lucky.

Ah, 2002. I was thinking we talked on the phone sometime last summer and I was wondering how that one got by me. One of these days I'll tell you about my crash in 1986. I ruined a brand new, week old Shoei and had a very good leather jacket cut off me in that one. I still have both around here somewhere as souvenirs. Spent 5 days in the hospital. It's a gruesome story, ha ha.

Sometimes only

but I'd say I wear it much more often. I now wear my seat belt all the time since that though. MRI would just show atrophy and OldTimers. I improved, not perfect yet.

I went out and bought a new helmet because of this thread, the Bell was 5 years old and the liner was starting to fall out. My Z1R is only a couple years old but I decided to buy another. Ride safe...Larry

Helmets are suppose to be replaced even if you drop them on the pavement or concrete floor. Even if they don't show outward damage, they can be compromised according to the test facilities and manufacturers.

I am glad you made it out with a small cut, a pranged bike and gear, and some aches and pains. Have the bike checked out by a shop that can do proper measurements to ensure the frame isn't tweaked, did a number on the front end and fork tubes.

It's toast, I'm going to get a repair estimate today. I did one myself yesterday and came up with over $4800.00 including paint. The other guy's insurance adjuster told me I can do my own estimate but that I can't "profit from my loss". I don't feel much like I'm profiting on this deal regardless of how much cash they give me. This was a great bike and it will NEVER be the same. I know there are other Hawks out there with this same body kit but there certainly wasn't one in Cincinnati.
