Mounting iphone on bars
« on: March 11, 2013, 05:45:30 PM »
has anyone made or have pictures of a good mounting option for an iphone on their handle bars?  I saw some threads where a guy jb welded an old case but I'm worried that wouldn't be safe.

Funny you should ask.  If you're interested, I have a powered waterproof iPhone mount kit for handlebars.  I used it for GPS, which is nice, but my wife bought me a real GPS for my birthday.  I'd happily sell it to you.  I'll snap some pics.

Here's the kit I bought.

There are a boatload of bar mount options available. Definitely DO NOT try JB Welding a case and risking your $500 phone.

Not that it will solve your mounting issue but a coworker just picked up a waterproof case for his Iphone, that would be a good thing to have when you find a mount you like. I'm sure theres a bunch available, a client of mine has one for his Harley and if his Iphone or Ipod touch doesnt rattle out and fall off on the piece of #$%* he rides you'll be laughing on a CB i'd imagine.

I did the JB weld Iphone mount... I just didn't have an extra $150+ to buy one at the time. And there weren't many other options then either.
If you're careful and do it properly it'll hold well. I had mine mounted in such a way that the power cord acted as a back-up link should the mount fail. (it didn't fail) Ultimately I ended up not using it much anyway, instead choosing to keep my eyes on the road... It'd be nice for a long road trip though.
A few of my friends recently bought a "Lifeproof Case" ... They look really nice for protection and they have some cool mounting options.

I'll probably just leave it in my pocket.  Thought it would be nice for the GPS when taking long trips on backroads.  150 bucks more than I can spend as well.

Came across this last year, the Cell Buckle, inexpensive but I haven't tried it so can't say if it is any good or not.

I have the rokform case with magnet. I literally place my phone on the tank and it stays there without any issue. Its pretty awesome. I wish i could get an otterbox with a magnet in it, but doesn't seems likely to happen unless I get busy with a router.

Neodymium magnets glued/taped into precise holes in a case. Holds the the phone to the gas tank securely, I trust it with my iphone.

Just buy a magnetic tank bag with a map pocket on top and you'll be able to carry your phone, water, rain gear, and a sandwich.

This is what I do when going any distance on my VTX.   Not only is the phone visible and dry, it is well insulated from road shock and vibration when in the map case of the tank bag.  Most of the time its turned off though since I don't pay any attention to it while riding but I wouldn't leave home without it.  Try to find a pay phone when your sitting on the side of the highway 40 miles from nowhere.   The tank bag also comes in really handy for all the little things that make a full day in the saddle a lot more enjoyable.

Keep the phone in your pocket until you reach your destination or pull off of the road.

It is another distraction that WILL get you killed.
Even car drivers get distracted by GPS screens ,cellphones and texting and they get KILLED.

There is nothing on that phone that is worth your life.

My wife and I were walking on a road and a car almost hit us because the woman driving was looking at her GPS trying to find a house.

It is possible to safely use a GPS while driving or riding.  It depends on conscientious drivers/riders.

In 50 years of driving and riding I have criss crossed the country several times both north and south, east and west and always got to where I was going with just a old fashioned paper road map and paying attention to road signs.  That was before GPS was invented.  Two years ago my wife bought me a Garmin GPS.  In the first three months I had it I got bad directions from it twice.  It is now in a desk drawer collecting dust.  Not that I don't trust it, but who really needs it?  Correction, I guess I really don't trust them.

I use an iPhone mount on my bike not for answering calls and texting but for a speedometer app that I use. And now my gps talks. It works great with the Bluetooth. It's like turn in 300ft so instead of looking for the street sign I will be looking at the road plus

+1 on the bluetooth....

I was thinking about getting a mount, but decided to hold off.  If I did, I think I would either try the Lifeproof mount (since I have a lifeproof case) or a Rammount.

If you don't mind spending the money, I recommend getting a bluetooth compatible communication system for you helmet.
I have an iPhone5 and a communication system for my helmet.  I love it for long trips.  I can enter the destination address in the iPhone before I leave, put the phone in my pocket, and then just listen to the directions.  No need to ever take my eyes off the road.

Although probably not considered safe, I also listen to music... it's great because the cell phone will automatically reduce the music volume so you can hear the navigation directions.

I would recommend against the tank bag suggestion.  I have a tank bag with the clear top to hold a map.  Anytime I've had a map (old school paper one) or my cell phone / GPS on my tank bag, I've been tempted to look at it while riding... which is crazy dangerous.   I think a bar mount would be a lot safer (although still dangerous).

That's what I use the handle bar mount for. I don't have a speedo so I have to use my iPhone app for my bel air and my chopper
