Anyone put a K1 forkear reflector on a K2 ?
« on: March 07, 2013, 02:34:59 AM »
Hi !

I wonder If anyone put a K1 forkear reflector on a K2 forkear. As you surely know the reflectors are in diferent sizes and their thread also, K1 M5 and K2 M6.

Problem is that I really not like the big bulky K2 reflectors and the only options I see is drive with a hole (not that nice) or put on the K1 reflector.
Anyone know if there's a adaptor for this ?

At first I thougt the tread was in the plastic part and therefor thougt of drawing the piece in CAD then use a 3D printer to print out the new K1 reflectorbase but with K2 thread.
But as I found out the threaded part is the metallic reflector, hence I cant use a 3D printer.

So I thought of maybe cuting 1 cm of the M5 thread and weld on a M6 thread, Alt.1. But I belive the metal is some cheap alloy and that welding would be hard.

Or make a internal M5 thread in one end and a M6 in the other and then drill the plastic base to fit the now larger diameter. Alt.2

Any input is wellcomme, especially if it's a solution to not use the reflector and not have a hole or a ugly screwhead sticking out :D

No, it has never been done and probably never will.
It would be considered high sacrilege bordering on heresy to mix and match parts that way.

Your information shall be promptly forwarded to THE SPANISH INQUISITION for proper handling.
Good luck.  ;)

Vik you must really hate those reflectors, eye? :D I have both the K1 and K4 reflectors and they are such a small part of the bike who sees it? Seems like a lot of work to go through just to change it. Then you will have some smart guy asking why the wrong reflectors are on your bike. I vote to keep it OEM, but it is your bike and if you really hate them do what makes you feel good. Ride on... 8)

Haha maybe overkill. But I thought maybe some guys around here had the same thoughts as me. I actually know a guy that welded on a new thread on the fork ear. But since they are so expensive I don't see that as an option.

They are a small part, but for me to get those bad boys to sweden would cost like 100$, so I would rather find another solution and buy other stuff with the money :D

You can do what I did to my 500.  It was missing both fork reflectors and mounts.  I was able to get the mounts cheap, but the reflectors were a bit pricey, plus they fade over time.  So I just secured the mounts with a flat profile screw of the appropriate thread size and got some 3M backed adhesive mount reflectors from the autoparts store.  Made a tiny cutout in the mounting tape where the screw was protruding out of the mount slightly and stuck em on.  The new reflectors are bright, nice size and have a nice chrome trim.  Plus if they ever get damaged or fade, I can replace 'em for about $3.

I used some phosfor bronze tig rod and welded up the threaded hole. Then I drilled and tapped it smaller. 5mm to 4MM? not positive. I thought about using a nutsert or a timesert.
