Evaluating Algebraic Expressions
Order of Operations/P.E.M.D.A.S.: Exercise I
Evaluating algebraic expressions can be a simple process,
but needs to follow an order of operations to get the right answer.
The sequence details the order you follow to
add, subtract, multiply, and divide. The order is:

P.E.M.D.A.S.
Parenthesis | Exponents | Multiplication | Division | Addition | Subtraction

Perform the operations inside a parenthesis first
Then exponents
Then multiplication and division, from left to right
Then addition and subtraction, from left to right
You can also create a little phrase to memorize, as the sequence:
Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally

6/2(1+2) can also be expressed as 6/{2(1+2)}. The extra brackets are normally deleted by convention.

This could rival the airplane on the moving tarmac thing  :P

But the answer is 9 according to my recollections and understanding of order of operations, but that was a long time ago...

Freshman year Algebra 1. My older sister was in the same class, and it REALLY pissed her off that I got A's and I spent most of my time in class daydreaming about motorcycles. ;D

This isn't even algebra, just simple arithmetic.

It's all in the notation. What is 2(1+2)/6=? The left-to-right rule works in this case, yet it is exactly the same equation... ;)

Dude, your kid is very wrong. This is not even really Algebra, it's basic operations.
I spent 9 years getting a masters in mechanical engineering from the University of Washington. My Minor study was in Physics. LOL, when I had a job i used math all the time. I'd bet $2000 right now that the answer is 9. HELL ill bet my bike!!! and my Bike is worth way more than 2G.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

I m sure the reason it was posted is because of the conflict it would create, I personally don't care. the daughter walked pass the cpu and seen what I was reading and threw in her 2 cents.

but, if the airplane in question had enough trust to create more pressure under it than over it it would lift off with out forward motion

just wanted to also say  (6÷2)(1+2)= is the same as  6÷2(1+2)= the notation is just a little different.

If I were you I would not lay any money on the answer to this problem. The answer depends on a few factors, I'll put it that way.

Thats funny, So an expression of math is affected by factors.
Are you talking about the factors of each number? or like Wind and Rain.
Basic math is just that, The rules are set the only factors are in the numbers them selfs.
I'm going to stop. I dont want to piss anyone off.
If you want bet, let me know.

I would not bet Gregorymoto.  He is right.
FWIW, I have a degree in math and taught it for awhile.  (not that having a degree matters in this case or any case for that matter!)

The only problem with Gregory's assertion is that there is a rule to follow.
There is no arithmetic rule, it is only a recent convention.
