76 CB550 - having my bike tuned, but should I wait?
« on: March 13, 2013, 05:25:56 AM »
I have a 76 CB550 with Carpy header and junk pods. I am ordering an AntiPod set up from a forum member but had scheduled to have my bike tuned this week by a local shop. I know I have 115 mains and stock slow jets and that my needle clip is only one lower than stock. I need new jets and needle clip adjusted - and planned to have the shop clean / rebuild the carbs as required.

Since my AntiPod is probably 2 months out, should I have the work done or wait? I'm leaning towards getting it done...but I'm not sure. The shop doesn't have an exhaust gas tuning set up so I don't know if there will be any benefit. I should probably just communicate the new air box set up to them?

Thoughts?

Guess if you want it running good for the prime 2 months down in Florida you should take it in. When you get yor new Antipod maybe you will feel more comfortable fiddling with it then.

what brings you to the conclusion you need new jets and the clip position adjusted?
- and planned to have the shop clean / rebuild the carbs as required.
prove when you get it back from the shop, they did exactly what was needed and what they said they did.  ::)
just pointing out you should, and can, do it yourself....and do it right ;)

I was anxious to ride last summer and hadn't had a motorycle before, so I paid a shop to do some work for the sake of time.
Over the winter, while I was giving the bike an overhaul myself, I noticed all the little things they #$%*ed up.  The new airbox they had gotten and installed for me was in upside down, and missing some parts, and one of the mounting screws ended up going right into the plastic so I couldn't remove just the filter.  Carb drain hoses not hooked back up. Fuel lines routed messily and kinked up. Etc.
Now that I'm more familiar with my bike, I won't let anyone else touch it.  I second the idea that, if paying someone else, that you at least should give it a good inspection afterwards to make sure things were done, and done correctly.

I surely understand the appreciation one gets from learning and wrenching on your own bike - unfortunately I am in between homes, relocated with my company living out of my travel trailer - my work shop is a 10x10 canopy next to my camper. I don't have ANY experience with carbs, nor do I have the required tools on hand for carb work. I'm heading home to NC tomorrow, leaving the bike with a mechanic for the week was my best option. The bike runs like crap on part throttle so I know it needs attention.....I want this thing to run sweet because I'm starting to really enjoy it. If they screw it up (which I hope they don't) they won't get paid and we'll go from there.
