1978 CB550K Carb rebuild questions
« on: March 16, 2013, 09:20:14 AM »
Two questions.
I just got my carbs back together after having them off the bank. I think i have everything in place except for the spring on the throttle shaft. The one end is obvious but i cant seem to tell where the other end goes and i cant find any pictures refrencing it.,
Heres a shot.

The other question is after i connected the "light weight spring" on the choke plate shafts together the chokes dont seem to 'snap shut'.  If i pull the cable connection they sometimes rotate with it and then snap shut  but they take a while / or some encouragement to open. Any suggestions?

Thanks again.
Grant

The loose end catches on the carb body itself.

If the choke doesn't open up fully, you will need to add additional turns to the "light weight spring" till it does.

Isn't that spring heavy? I always hated the throttle on my 550. The heavy return makes it feel slower. I released the spring and attached another lighter one, extending it to the clamp threads on the end of the emissions hose. Nice snappy throttle. A little red neck, I know, but it serves.

Thanks guys, i searched and found a picture for reference of the upper spring. Got that in place last night.

Is there an issue with going to far with the light weight spring? its already around twice.  Thanks again!

I don't remember how many turns it needs, it just seems like it is always one more than I wind it to begin with!

As long as it doesn't bind when activated, it should be ok.

You can find a bunch of pics in my sig. As far as the chokes, I always put them back on very last. The reason is because if you don't they can be too tight in there and catch on a side. Solution is to loosen them. With them loose they should all function with the spring properly connected. Then retighten them all one at a time verifying each one is free before moving on to the next one.
