Checking timing before engine start.
« on: March 16, 2013, 06:46:29 AM »
Good Morning Gentleman,

Well bob in burbank here, give alittle update on my cb, well the motor is in
the bike, carbs rebuild and jetted for pods and 4 into 1, mains 120, these
carbs are from a 77 which has adjustable needle, lowered clip down one.
pilot screw 1 1/2 out. I think Im pretty close, have to run it to see. I acually
do have a question, I know to check timing and dwell the motor should be running, is there a trick to check before I start the motor, I want to make sure
its close before I start the engine, then I can dial it in, and adjust valves.
Any thoughs, any help would be great.

Bob in burbank.

Hey Bob do a search on 'static timing'. I use that method on new projects to get real close before first starts as the engine does not need to be running.  Also remember to adjust valves on a cold engine.  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=96637.0

Hi Bob,

like ekpent said, you should adjust the valves with a cold engine, so do that before your starting the engine.
Ignition dwell and timing can be adjusted with a feeler gauge and a simple test light. Just follow the fine Honda workshop manual ;)
