Haha. Wide rear tire
« on: March 17, 2013, 04:42:16 AM »
I want to know the widest tire I can put on my bike. Before I get the typical "read other posts" response think about if you can answer my question or not. If not then don't because I have read those wide tire posts for hours and either find multiple IMO answers or people complaining about how pointless wide tires are.
My bike is a 76 750k and I'm planning on buying aluminum rims either excel or sun. I've read that for a 140/150 tire I should get a 3.5" wide rim. Is this true? Or should the rim be wider? At what size tire would I have to get the offset sprockets, 150? After offsetting the sprockets and moving the brake stay how much larger before I hit the swing arm? I would like to go with a 150 or 160 if possible.

I have a 180/55-18 Avon on my 75CB750, now I have to tell you I have a boxer hardtail frame from CycleX.  The motor is offset mounted about a half 1/4" to the left and I run an offset front sprocket.  The chain clears the left edge of the tire by 1/8" and I run a channelled tensioner pulley to prevent lateral movement of the chain.  Before I installed the channelled pulley the chain would rub the tire edge on hard acceleration or right turns.  Yes my bike is a custom barhopper and not something you would ride on a long journey, although I have gone on a 200 mile planned ride.  It wasn't that bad.

$12,000 CDN and that doesn't cover the cost of the parts  :-\, but if it doesn't go I will continue to ride her and turn heads.

The tire width chart will help you get the right size rims-

But to help answer your questions about the physical limitations of the frame, consider the following from my experience-

I had to bend my brake stay out of the way on my stock 73 when I put a 130 on the stock (WM4) rim.

A 140 barely clears with a standard chain.  I'd consider 140 the widest you can go without altering the chain-line with offset sprockets.

A 160 is a close close fit.  Pretty close to the physical limitations of the swingarm.  I've seen CBR wheels put in a stock swing arm (they're 160 wide) and the pinch seams had to be clearanced :o

I'd say 150 is probably as wide as you want to go, but the profile of the tire you choose could make a small difference in how things fit.

Thanks andrew, thats exactly the answer i was looking for. I'm not looking to go crazy just some more meat. I'll probably get the offset sprocket kit from cyclex and get a 150 tire

Make sure you tell Ken the year of the bike when you order the offset sprocket, some year 750 require some modification to the cover to prevent interference, and remember if you move the front sprocket outboard then you also have to move the rear out the same amount.   ;)

Ok thanks ill look into that more on the sprockets. Does anyone make an aluminum offset sprocket?
Thanks true blue for the chart. I needed that too to figure out the rim width I needed

the best fit {and recommended size} tire for a 3.5 inch rim would be a 140. you should be able to get away with stock sprockets for this. If you need a wider chain line, the K7-K8 750's have a 10mm wider sprocket carrier, all you need then is a 10mm offset front sprocket, or alternatively use a K7-K8 engine as they have a 10mm longer counter shaft....  Now if you had read the right threads, you would already know this.... ;D ;D :P

Haha dont get me started about reading threads...I'm still waiting for somebody to complain about putting a wide tire on. Im sticking with my k6 motor and hub. I noticed i can get both front and rear sprockets for 90 bucks on cyclex. I think I'm gonna get a 4.25 rear rim to accomodate a 150 tire and a 2.15x18 front rim because I'm going to get atleast a 110 front tire, it sounds like a 120 may be too wide and rub(based on all the threads i've read!!!). It also sounds like the 18" front will give me more options for tires and i'll get a 120/80 18" tire becuase that will give really close to the same tire height, once again based on all the threads ive read. ;D

Yeah, 120 is too wide on a 2.15 front rim, my old GSXR1100 had a 2.75x18 front rim with a 110, so i definitely would not go 120 on that smaller rim, even on an 18.....

I have a 3.5 rear and a 2.5 front on my current build {in boxes  ;D} and i am using a 140 rear and 110 front... ;)
You will really mess up the handling if you over tire the front, i understand you want width but having a good matched set of tires and correct sizes is really what you should be looking for... ;)

I just ordered a 110/90 18 and based off some of the charts it puts the height .40" off from stock so wont mess up my speedo too bad. Also that number is based off of a 2.15 rim so I am thinking that if I put it on a 2.5 rim then it wont pinch as much and bring the height down a touch...might be real close for speedo.

Member "Terry in Australia" had a very well set up 750 with 18's front and rear on wider rime, maybe send him a pm and get some details, he's had over 20 750/4's and said Goldie was the best handling 750 he ever owned.... ;)  Just a thought

FIRST OF ALL THIS IS RETARDED. imho. Nice build but better suited for a v-twin.

Second, I have 110's on both factory 19 and 18 rims. The bike handles awesome (although I do have a great suspension as well). I get down on it more so than on my Buell "own the corners" yeah right go #$%* yourself. Buell's motto should have been "Owned by the corners". Seriously don't be a douche. Wide tires + old time bikes = queer.

That's a little uncalled for, twistedengineering.  He didn't ask for opinions on the subject.  He asked for information, and is getting it.  There's no need to insult the man's choice in mods.
