Fuel Petcock '77 CB550F
« on: April 24, 2010, 03:34:35 PM »
In attempting to buy a new Fuel Petcock for my bike, I found that it [part# 16950-388-015] is obsolete. I searched ebay extensively for an NOS Petcock with no luck.

However, "bestpartsseller" had NOS OEM Petcocks for a '77 CB550F Part # 16950-393-015. I asked him if it would fit my F Super Sport. Nice fellow - he measured the nut on the "F" Petcock and said it was the same size as the one on his "F" model. It was also the same size as the one on my bike. Of course I ordered the #16950-393-015 Petcock.

It came today - is now installed - no problems. The ONLY difference is the outlet on the "F" is on the bottom of the Petcock and the outlet on the "K" is on the side [horizontal toward the rear of the bike]. Not a problem. I didn't even have to change the hose [which is new anyway from a recent Carb job].

Since I bought the # 16950-393-015 Petcock on ebay, I don't know if it is obsolete or available. This Petcock evidently also fits 1977 CB750K, and 1976 &1977 CB750A.

Maybe this will help some of you guys if you ever need a Petcock.

I enjoy, appreciate and am learning a lot from your forum.

What bike were you fitting the petcock to? Do you have a link to the seller? That 77 550f petcock is rare as wooden horse poop! Id like one please.

I put the Petcock on my '77 CB550F.

'Don't have the link. Go to ebay and search Item # 350342142150. When you find it click on "See other items" or click on "Visit store" Classic Cycle Depot"The Seller is listed as "bestpartseller". Feedback is 99.8%. Nice folks. I bought Saturday and he shipped Tuesday.

The Honda part number I bought is 16950-393-015. A week ago he had 3 or 4 of these Petcocks listed individually.

Good luck

Josh,

Thanks. Just thought someone else might need one of these Petcocks.

I wish there was an accurate interchange list for all of these great ol' CB bikes. It would help all of us.

I've had this '77 CB550F about a year. 'Been out of bikes since 1960 so I've got a lot to learn. I was really glad to find this site. Lots of info sharing here.

I like the sound of "yet". Means you ain't done. You'll get there. The members here will be there if you need 'em. Just don't give up. It must be fun to restore one of these bikes.

The good part of it is these are really good bikes. They obviousy live a long time. My '77 550 has just over 12,000 miles, original and is a 7.5 to 8 on a 10 scale. I added new tires, a windshield and luggage rack. The carbs were done last summer. I'm looking for a crash bar and possibly some hard saddlebags. Weather's getting nice in Chattanooga so I'm ready to ride.

Hang in there

the weather is so nice i begining to feel the burn to ride again.
gotta find a gas tank and install a few parts and tires then i'll be ready to ride.

my bike was a basket case and when i bought it, it was in several plastic tubs.  wow i've come a long way and if it wasnt for the members here i'd still be trying to figure out the reassembly phase.

This is just a random question:  I have a '77 cb550 and I'm having petcock issues so I've been looking around on ebay.  As pointed out in the initial entry, the F and K models have different facing spouts.  Does anyone have an explanation for this?

I have the F so mine points down which to me seems really dumb considering how close it is to the carburetor.  I've put new hoses on it and it just seems like the one designed for the K (pointing horizontal) would be a better flowing design.  The hoses on mine are ok but some of the bends are a little tight.  Just thinking out loud I guess...

I have a 1977 CB550F and just bought this petcock as mine was buggered, have not had a chance to fit it yet as I am at work now.
There is a screen tube that come in the package, how does this attach?
silly question I know but it does not seem to click or snug in all that well and I don't want to have a screen tube floating around in my tank loose.

the petcock has a white plastic tube comming straigh up out of the center, then a rubber washer, the tube screen was separate in the package and I don't know how to secure it onto the petcock assembly.

There are at least 4 different fuel valves for the CB550
Except for the 77-78 K model all the tap outlets pointed straight down.

The 77-78 tank bungs are small diameter (5/8, I think).  So only the selector valves for the 77-78 F or K will fit to the those tanks, normally.  If you can stand a straight back single outlet, the CX500 has a selector valve that will fit.

The filter for these valves fit into the tank bung.  And, there is a step in the inner diameter that keeps the filter from getting pushed into the tank.

The 75-76 Fuel valves and filters are of different design from the above (3/4 inch tank bung, I think).  They do not interchange between tank.   The 74 has yet a different design, with a sediment bowl, which is the same type found on the CB500s.

Thanks TT,
So from what I gather from your post, the inner porton of the tank bung should have a stepped in diameter, so the filter can not go past the bung and free float in the tank?

Great info!

It figures that I'd have a 78 tank and need a petcock. I've got 2 Sabre petcocks, one from a 500 and one from a 76 550. None of them fit.

Grrrr...

Hello everyone,

I know this is an old thread, but this seems like the place to ask this question.  I have a 77 CB550F that needs a new petcock.  The old one has TWO outlets, but the 16950-393-015 part that is mentioned here appears to only have one outlet.  Does the OEM part (16950-388-015) have two outlets or does my bike have a non-OEM part?  Thanks in advance.

The earlier F tanks had fuel taps with two outlets and will fit fine on the 77 model.  I suspect that is what you have, as none of the 77 fuel taps has dual outlet.

How did you surmise you have a true 1977 F fuel tank?  Be aware that 77F fuel taps will not fit onto 75 and 76 F model tanks as the tank bung is larger on earlier models.

Thanks for the swift reply TwoTired.  I guess I am not sure that I have a true 77 fuel tank.  I went and looked at a 75-76 fuel valve and it looks like the one I currently have on my bike.  I wonder if there is another valve that will work for the 75-76 gas tank as part 16951-374-671 is also discontinued.  If I thought I was in tough place before, now I don't even have a work around!

I believe Pingle makes one and an adapter for the 75-76 tank bung.  Best have deep pockets, though.

http://pingelonline.com/powerflo_application_frames.htm

Otherwise, the used market is where to look.  Any SOHC4 Honda 75-76 ought to have the same fuel valve.

I've found filter screens floating in tanks before. Stepped or not, they must not be idiot-proof.

Nothing of the bike is idiot proof.  Especially when one tries to adapt parts from other years.  You can't use a 77-78 screen on the 75-76 fuel valve/tank bung or you'll get exactly what you describe (and no useful reserve operation, either).

I got a NOS 75-76 petcock and it fits great.  When I was installing it, I moved the gas tank about an inch forward to remove the rubber gromet and my in-line fuel filter exploded because it was so old and brittle.  I replaced that and the fuel line as well and now my system doesn't leak anymore.  I look forward to seeing how much my fuel economy will change.  Thanks a bunch TwoTired!  I would have bought the wrong part without your help.
