New rear sprocket installed and hub assembly cleaned. New cush drive rubber.

Chain and front sprocket in excellent condition so I decided to leave it alone. Chain is soaking in a large freezer bag for days.

At a standstill now. Waiting on tires and still have the front brake to change. Once this is done the front end can be assembled.

I have a line on several parts from a guy I contacted out in Indiana from a CL ad. This includes handlebars, exhaust pipes, possible set of mufflers, rear footpeg brackets, alternator cover, rear brake pedal and more.

Decided to buy from someone else versus the junk you get on flea bay.

Where did you source that rear hub and cush drive rubber?  In my searches, I haven't been able to find just a sprocket... is the hub and sprocket always a package deal?  Also, what size chain does it take?

Sorry for all the questions... I'm getting ready to dig into my Dream and would like to have this info handy.

Never counted the links in the chain. The hub was on it. Best price for rear sprocket was Ohio Cycle. This is the steel 29 tooth. $40.00.

The cush drive rubber can be bought at several vendors. I ordered mine from:

 http://www.claussstudios.com/id45.html  $44.00

The cush rubber that were on it are in decent shape but on all of my builds I replace them.

Tires, tubes and rim strips arrived today.

Looks like a busy day in the shop tomorrow. Waiting on one more order, seat and fender.

The brakes operate as intended. I'm just wondering if the brake cam can be removed. It does not have a circlip like the rear.

I hate to pound on it without knowing. Parts are hard to come by.

Here is the rear brake. As you can see it's pretty straight forward.

Here is the front brake. I don't have anything to remove the springs. If the brake cam can be removed then I think the shoes will come off. Just a footnote. The front shoes actually don't need replaced. The lining is in good shape but since I have a pair would like to change them out.

Might just run them down to the shop in Needles.

tt
If I recall, those brake pads just "float" on the pivot and cam, held in place with the springs.  Some muscle to pry them apart against the spring tensions are all that's needed to work them up and over the flange on the end of the pivot.  Putting the new ones back on is a reverse muscle and curse. :-X

Maybe try wedging something between the two shoes when the pivot is activated, so that they are held apart when the pivot is swung back to its rest position.  That might give some space and freedom to slip them off.

Those springs are pretty stiff but try just pulling on one side and then fold it towards the other shoe.

I use a big screwdriver between the shoes on the pivot and I chuck a large bolt through the axle hole and clamp it down in the vice to give some leverage. Then pull the one shoe back and work it up to roll it off the pivot. Another set of hands helps... once you have some opening on the one side another screwdriver to wedge open the fixed pin side.

Bigger fulcrum needed.

Break out the come-along and snake a cable around the shoe?

You sure you want to change these shoes?

Going to need a spring tool to change out the rear shoes...

Good luck!

Up at 0300 hrs. and out to the shop. Sure is quiet.  :P

First thing was change the front tire. Not to bad. A little swearing but nothing major.  ;D This is a K-70 replica tire by Duro.

Then we tackled the front brake. I won! Not going to be so lucky on the rear. Might have to run it down to Needles. Oh well, it's a CBX ride.  ;)

Just a couple of pictures on a mock up. Fender should be done soon. Everything has to come off to install the fender first.

Looks nice tt, good job cleaning and changing that tire. Hope it has good modern rubber compound you will be happy with.  You won't be setting any land speed records with the bike, so the Duro should do the job.

Look forward to you firing this one up and providing some video/audio of it.

CX500 and most of my motorcycle stuff is loaded in the moving truck. Fixed some lunch and gotta pickup some stuff and then retrieve the CB550 and start loading up the apartment...  Don't have enough boxes.  I hate moving.
Did sand a little on Stev-o's caliper while waiting for my lunch to cook. Ended up burning my lunch as I didn't stir it enough. Garlic Chicken.

Wanna crawl in bed and escape to a nap...oh well.

Look forward to your next installment of photos.

Going to attempt the rear shoes tomorrow. I did manage to get the old ones off. Swapped out the front brake line and bled on the k7. It's done, running great and ready for the River Run. Length was perfect! Thanks again Bill!  8)

The key to these rear pads is to drill the holes out on the shoes. Way smaller than OEM shoes. The local shop loaned me a spring compressor/stretchie thing tool.

Be done by 0500 hrs.  :D After that it's a CBX ride to unwind.

Can't work on them all the time!  ;)

Don't follow, where are you drilling holes on the rear shoes? Enlarging the holes for the springs?

3.25/16 tires are hard to find or on back order. Went with these at $154.00 to my door for two tires, tubes and rim strips. Free ship, no tax.

3.50/16 will work just fine.

I thought so. Bike will never see any high speed. Just a putt putt. I have to keep the cost down as I am getting close to $1300 in straightening the bike out.

Haven't even got to the exhaust parts.  :o

...back to packing and loading.  Not having help is double edged, no one to give you crap or rush you but no one to help.

Had to pick up both bikes so far.  Dumped CX on it's side when loading at the top of the ramp (I was still on the ground and it got away from me.) The CB550 strap slipped and it went down on it's side bringing it back to the apt. Fortunately some other things slowed the impact with no damage.  Got too much stuff and not enough boxes and containers.  3 days in the buckboard Uhaul isn't going to be fun, but it will be an adventure. Going through parts of TX and LA and MS and up through Alabama. Never been that route before.  Won't be stopping for any fun along the way as  it is Midland to Vicksburg to NE TN in 3 days if things go as planned.  CAF Museum in Midland/Odessa would be interesting but I believe most of the planes are away at airshows already.

tt.........looking real good 8) 8) 8) 8)

The brake exercise is something like setting and un-setting a bear-trap ;D ;D ;D

Your experiencing the typical parts-search.......everyone gravitates to 'Ohio-Nick' for early parts.

Last summer a friend of mine helped me get his completely 100% stock and original white CA77 running to ride it in a vintage 'Ride-em, Don't Hide-em' event sponsored by MOTORCYCLE CLASSICS magazine.  The editor actually rode the bike and had a Go-Pro camera mounted on the bars. It had no problems.........just like back in the day.........the Norton came home in the chase-van ;D ;D ;D

Mr friend had been trying to sell the bike for $2500 for a few years.  After the ride it sold for cash and rare-non-running bikes. Don't be surprised if you get offers from NEW friends ;) ;)

Thanks OS! It's becoming quite the job at a great expense.  :D Rear brake was in fact a bear trap. Almost over engineered.  ;D

At least it will be road worthy and done right.

tt, at least you aren't having to deal with rusted fasteners on top of all the other minor stuff in cleaning it up and performing the extended interval maintenance.

Been up since 8am (I know not real early like you, but needs to warm up enough to get the joints moving without too much pain (arthritis) packing and loading the truck. Had some help show up around 10:30 and a buddy and I had to repack about 1/3 of the truck after a couple hours of their loading. The help was not packing things high enough. No doubt, I have too much junk and papers. Few too many hobbies as well.
Got a flakey breaker on my second bedroom and had to play with it a bit after cycling the breakers earlier today.  Tired of dealing with that stuff.

The end of your project on the CA78 is not too far away. You will be able to have it running before too long now.  Hope she comes together without too many more hurdles.
