Tomorrow I'm going to take several pictures and post here. Hopefully we can brain storm this out.

I'm thinking the problem lies in the handle bar slide and cable stop.

I love you man!

Probably Bloody Mary's around 0630 hrs. You need a retirement schedule.

Here is what I do.

Wake up around 0400 hrs.

Drink coffee until 0600 hrs. while in the shop.

Shower, get dressed then mix bloody Mary's around 0630 hrs.

Get half shid faced around 0745 hrs.

Have breakfest out until 0830 hrs.

Do running around and shopping until 1030 hrs.

Unpack food from 1030 to 1100 hrs.

Take a nice nap while everyone else is working.

Wake up around 1300 hrs. from nap and make mocha frappe's.

About 1500 hrs. think about what to make for dinner.

Have dinner around 1630 hrs.

Clean up around 1730 hrs.

Margaritas around 1800 hrs.

Go to bed drunk around 2000 hrs.

Next day repeat. Can mix different cocktails. Times might vary since I haven't worn a watch since last November.

Toy............I've been busy with a few events and trying to get my salt-flats bike together for an adventure in August.  You sure have had your problems.  I try to stay away from aftermarket vendors unless they have a spotless reputation.  I think you have the cable-route correct so hopefully the replacement unit will fit.  The problem with the bars is mostly confusion with the CA95 which are more narrow.  That red CA72 would have been a steel.............take the parts you need and sell the frame and motor for more!  Year by year the chassis are identical between CA72 and CA77-78.

Now that the bike is parked for a while.........you will find the correct parts.  I'll ask a friend if he is interested in selling any parts off of a CA77 that is stored in a shed with a lot of weather-intrusion. The seat trim may still be on it too.

I like you daily schedule...........but I like my whiskey straight ;D ;D ;D

OS, yeah it was a great price but all I needed was the handle bars. Probably should of picked it up but 270 miles from me. Buy the time I paid for fuel it was just not cost effective for a few parts.

A set of bars just sold on flea bay for $81.00. I didn't mind bidding but the auction said "slightly" bent. Not sure what slightly meant so I passed.

This didn't take long. Not long at all.

If you remember in an earlier post I said the cable was about 5 mm short. First cable was 37 3/8 inches. Second cable was 37 7/16 long. Neither fit.

I ordered another cable out of Canada from  siriusconincnosparts on flea bay. Even with shipping it was a few dollars cheaper than my East Coast supplier. Length was 37 1/2 inches.

Lets begin. The assorted parts.

Throttle end.

Carburetor end.

Installed the cable into the carburetor and immediately looked at the throttle end.

Well look at that. Around 5 mm where as the other two (2) cables were flush against the outher sheath.

In this picture you can see where I slipped on the cable stop and the inner cable slide.

Still plenty of room huh? This was the issue.

In order to get these parts installed you had to pull the cable which then moved the slide at the carburetor.

This picture shows the cable adjuster turned to take out the slack.

I found some new OEM throttle end parts so I'll wait and replace them. I can install the carburetor and air cleaner tube in the meantime. After all, due to crap parts I'm getting good at this. Third time is a charm. Three (3) throttle cables later.  >:(

Still not happy about this. How many others are beating their heads against the wall? Crappy azz parts.

Still going to look for handle bars but the ones I have should work.

Toytuff, Success! Cool, that you have overcome this. It is nice to have parts that fit the first time, but have you found that you learn more when you make a mistake in installation and have to figure out where the issue lies? The bad parts don't help matters at all, the true test of a supplier is how they handle issues and if they make it right or make excuses or blame the parts. If you were dealing with parts suppliers in Asia your shipping costs would be such that you would be stuck with bad parts and shipping for them. These days buying things on ebay if you end up with the wrong part the seller may have you paying for return (usually) and it just cost you frustration, time, and money for the experience.

Glad you have a small victory.
Margheritas start early in celebration...after lunch.

Can you handle bars be straightened?

To continue..

I ran the cable into the bars. As you can see the inner cable is showing. Last two (2) cables there was no inner cable showing.

We then installed the outer cable stop and the throttle slide. You can see a little slack.

Then..

And temporally installed. I'll wait for new parts to arrive and replace both the stop and slide. I still think this is the wrong outer cable stop. You can also see a burr on the slide.

When I twist the throttle I can now hear the carburetor slide hit the bottom. I could not before. There will be just a little more slack when I adjust the idle screw as it is turned all the way out.

Here is the deal. You buy parts to work. One should not have to reorder and screw around tearing apart your bike two and three times. Throttle cables on a Dream is not an easy project as you have to remove the battery, air cleaner, intake tube and carburetor.

I have the correct grips coming but will hold off until I find the correct handle bars.

Yeah, I'm done ranting and pretty much done with the supplier. More time wasted and more money in the build.

TT.........nice pics..........mixed parts.  The cable-end at the throttle is for the earlier models and the CA95.  Easy switch but wait for your new parts to match the end with the slot in the throttle-twist slide.  It was the length of the sheath that made the difference for the required slack.

Grease is good but it collects dirt over time.  I use graphite spray with good success. The CA95 bars are about 1-inch narrower a the base and about 2-inches less at each grip. They also have less of a 'buckhorn' drop at the grips than the CA77 bars.

Third BM and tasting wonderful. Thought I better post quick before I slur my words.  :D

Handle bars.

I believe that Old Scrambler, Honda Nut and others are correct. These are not CA 77/78 handle bars but in fact CA 95 and possibly CA 72. I have looked at a lot of handle bars on a CA 72 and they appear to be the same.

Here is a set I bought of flea bay stating off a 305 Dream. Don't think so.

My top clamp width.

Width of bars in center.

They do not fit the top clamp width.

Ferrel to ferrel.

Throttle side. Notice hole location at very end.

My current bars. Notice hole location of outer cable stop.

More measurements of flea bay bars.

If anyone runs across Dream handle bars I'm pretty sure these are not the right ones. It takes this style. Notice the width at the top clamp.

You are correct. Read post above.

Someone on flea bay had OEM parts for $18.00 and free ship. Thought it was a good idea. Also bought OEM points for $17.00, free ship. That was a buy also.  ;)

I'll pick me up some spray. Thank you and thank you for your replies. Let's find some bars!  8)

From the measurements shown on your pictures of that bar, it looks very much like it would be for the C95/CA95.  The clamp on my C95 would hold ferrels that are just over 4" apart at their ends.  The one I have had small ape hangers on it when I got it, so I used an old high-bar from a CB77 that I had around, and hand-machined a slot for the throttle slide.  It works, but it is just a bit off on size and shape.  A bit of the ferrels stick out from under the clamp, so it is a little too wide there.

Sending you a PM regarding yours. ;)

Join the club.  I have four extra, wrong cables (throttle and brake) for my Baby Dream.  Parts manuals are no help when they show one cable, and eight different part numbers, but no correlation between years or what works with what...at least mine were cheap (most about $10)  And yes, I bought a spare 'correct' one when I finally figured it out ;) ;D ;D

Yup, list one year, 1961. Everything else is a coin toss! This is what makes them so hard to do especially since this is my first one. There won't be another.  ;)

Let me know if you need anything. A few won't fit parts.

I'm in the club too. Bought an ebay NOS clutch cable for the Z and guess what? It's wrong. [maybe from a Z1R, a lot of sellers don't know the differance?]
But cant find it in my buying history...WTF?  Eff it, ordered another....
Luckily Z parts are cheap compared to what you guys are up against.
