Building a 48 year old motorcycle has it's issues. The key to doing one of these builds is to buy a "as complete" bike as you can find. Other than the handle bars this was.

So...

1) Over a month just cleaning 48 years of grime, neglect.

2) Mother Honda only carries 10 % of parts. That might be stretching it.

3) You have to go to aftermarket Vendors. Not many of them. Ohio Cycle is tops. If they have it. Others are "hit or miss".

4) Flea Bay is an option but most sellers don't know what it fits. Good luck getting an answer. Like Doctors prescribing drugs, sellers want cash.

5) The only parts fische listed is for a 1961 model. They built these for 10 years with many variations. CA95, CA72, CA77, CA78. Add to that a Early model and a Late model. Look at a Model Identification Guide. They made a ton of variations on this model.

6) Shopping overseas is a big hit or miss. Yeah, you can get a refund but the shipping makes it not cost effective.

7) Sure. I could probably whip through another one in half the time. Same thing on the CBX after doing one.

I'm going to keep the Dream. To much money in it. It's just been 4 months of work and I mean almost every day. Just getting impatient which I should not do. I have nothing but time.

So, buy one. Their pretty cool bikes. Just buy one as complete as possible. Get a parts bike to go with it. You can thank me later.

A little more fine tuning but the idle is now correct.

The lift is rattling a bit but you get the idea.

Test ride tomorrow morning. Early.

Have a right exhaust pipe to change out then the bars. A set popped up on flea bay. I'm bidding high.

New OEM grips arrived and waiting on throttle sleeve parts. Will replace the whole setup to factory.

I'm just that way.

Road test analysis.

Rode kasper about 4 miles today in the Park next to me. Wide open at 0530 hrs. Straight line, figure eights and starting/stopping.

The results.

1) Can't get the idle down where I would like it. Chalk this up to handle bar setup. Wasn't meant to have Scrambler bars and a mix match of throttle parts.

2) Gee, thought I would have a little more power. It runs well, does not pop or backfire when decelerating. Maybe I'm expecting a Rocket when in fact they were not. Can't image a CA95. Slug. After all it's only 305 cc.

Will check timing, valve adjustment again. Found OEM points on flea bay so I will change them out.

3) Front and rear brake needed adjusted. Whoa Cowboy! Disc brakes were a wonderful invention huh?

4) Notice a small amount of seepage from battery overflow. A sealed battery is my choice but hard to find. Since the headlight is now a Halogen bulb it was recommended to upgrade the rectifier which I did. Not sure if it's the battery getting use to the charge or in fact overcharging. Reads 12.65 volts.

Will keep an eye on it.

5) Slight oil leak, clutch cover side towards rear. Kind of expected it since it was "smucked" at some point. The case is marred. I did sand the surfaces smooth but maybe a better sealer is needed.

Project for the Fall. Not in the mood. Can change gasket in my sleep.

6) Petcock is not leaking. Did notice a slight seapage when tested on the bench in the off position. Might be something I change out. In the Fall.

Other than the above everyting is in order. Clutch works good. Some hot oil circulating the plates had to help. Steers well, handles well.

Should be a fun little bike to ride.

Well done, Felicitations ! 48 years of neglect cannot be repaired in a few months without some frustration and expense. Glad you persevered, that beautiful bike is a banker for the future !

Congrat Toytuff! Hope it brought some smiles along with the strong pucker when you first tried to bring it down from higher speed. The shoes might improve slightly when bedded in, but don't expect a lot from them.
The 305 should be able to travel at a good clip but it won't get there in a hurry. The CA95 is good for about 55 to 65 depending on rider weight if they tuck down a bit. Would imagine the CA78 has same aero drag that improves with a tuck down to the handlebars atop the tank...
But, it is not a bike most would think of when speed is thought of...never was.

Congrats!

With your CA95 bars, more than I should be spending given my employment situation, but I'm sure that is not much of a surprise.

Congrats on getting it back on the road. A lesser man would have given up long ago, the booze must be working!

The first thing I'm going for are the points. I remember distinctly the last time when I had the cover off. Sparks were shooting everywhere. I was actually very surprised.

Yes, I sanded, wiped with cleaner then ran a business card through.

Pretty sure the points are shot or at best bad. I'll throw the new set in then take another spin. Would be the first place to start. Weak spark to the plug.

Valves were set twice @.004. Plugs @ .035.

No worries. Have a shed full of parts.

I received a phone call yesterday from Phoenix. The guy is looking for an ignition switch. We got to talking and he bought the CA72 that I passed on. He has a 1962 model he wants to get back on the road so he might buy them or trade. He is going to Tucson this weekend to buy some parts. Yup, stock handle bars with controls for $15.00.

Will see.

I told him it's not about making money but to keep them on the road and in the family. Another contact made. Can't have enough.

Thanks. Going to improve on it, ride for a little bit (which I nick named it) then sell it. Going to sell the 750 also.

Might take a while but a CBX will probably be my next purchase.

Ever riden a Transalp?
Nice bike for a little adventure riding. Not as rugged or capable as the Vstrom but probably one of the classic Hondas for its time that is a fun bike.
Find one and ride it if you like exploring the woods or trails and a bike that is decent on the streets as well.

Just missed out on a 79 CBX in PHX. Arggg...

I rode "little bit" again today. Fun little bike. Little being the operative word.

I read the owners manual again on the shift points. First to 12-15 mph, 2nd up to 16-24, 3rd24- 32 then 4th.

Not exact but in that area. Running real good. No smoke, clean plugs.
