Surprised your not lacing up that wheel.

Will you coat the tank with clear?

None of these are in any particular order. Most of the work has been done over the winter...

Cut the rear fender right down..

Was hand filling it...

Made a left side cover out of a steel sheet... this was my template

This is my led light bracket I designed...

Adjusted valve clearances and tightened cam chain (so fun to learn how to do)

Before scrubbing it clean...

After :)

and the whole thing now...

Scrubbed the engine and stripped the paint off...

lots more to come to catch up to where I am!

How'd you clean it clean like that with it together? Beautiful job, i want todo the exact same!

Clean the engine still together? All of it was cleaned with a green scrubby pad. :) That's it!

I wish I could lace my rear up Stev-o! I don't know how though and our buddy works at Excalibur with my BF. They are getting really busy with bike season, so I just have to be patient. I won't be suprised if it shows up here all done too.

Man it feels like it's been a loooong weekend. I'm beat. We got a bit more done. Damn brackets took oodles of time. Not totally thrilled with the paint job we did. Forgot to use the body putty on the ignition bracket and the paint didn't look too hot when we left it to dry, but screw it. I can take these apart later and fix when it's crappy out after the bike is running. Need to get this baby on the road.

Welded the brake lever back together. It's now the perfect fit for me to reach on the bike...

The headlight bracket is welded... and looks a bit different from my original idea...

Bf had a hard time spot welding this little sucker but we got it done!

See where I should have filled it? Totally forgot before painting it tonight. Thats what i get for pushing it when exhausted!

Got the holes drilled (although at this point we forgot about the hole for the headlight and made the headlight bracket holes too small! LOL

Have the spark plugs and new caps...

Picked up a piece of aluminum for making the chain guard once the rear is on...

Ready for paint!

Not ready for paint but we did it anyway!

Our little paint booths, they should be dry by tomorrow

Seems like such little work but that took us all day! Three trips between my house and shop (20 mins on way) and numerous oops we forgot this. Good lord. I'm looking forward to sleep now!

There was paint on the engine originally that we stripped with paint and gasket remover (there is a picture of the can earlier.) But to make her shine just the green scrubby. :) I shouldn't post when tired I forget stuff. LOL It really doesn't take much elbow grease either. I am looking to find some sort of wax or something to help it stay clean though.. I'll let ya know if I find something.

Got a bit more done today!

My new mirrors came in and my pro grips. Decided not to go with the bar end mirror. I rather enjoy seeing behind me and will be more comfortable with them on.

New mirrors

Tried to see how they'll fit without putting them on

That didn't really work too well, so actually put one on

New grips

Not too bad, be interesting to see how these feel once I have the bike running

Decided there was no way I could live with  my igniton bracket as it was. It looked terrible. So I stripped it at the shop today and went at it at home

Pictures are dark but you get the idea

Headlight is now mounted! :)

Brake is ready to go! Now if only the rear tire was ready so I could finish hooking it all up! LOL

Question about my switch housing here... see the gap? I think it's from the wiring but i'm not sure. Any ideas on what you think it is and how to fix it?

Did the wiring originally go in the the handlebars? If you're not going to run it that way, you'll have to trim the housing to allow room for the wiring, simple with a Dremal type tool. I love the Pro Grips...

Don't want to spoil the fun but you are  better off with bondo instead of spot putty, if you get any slightly thick spots with the putty {and you have}  it will eventually crack, its only meant for real small blemishes, not filling...... Just saying...

I know it will probably crack. Just a temporary solution that only has to last this summer. :) Thank you for the heads up though and for telling me what to use that won't crack! ;)

I will recheck for a pin. I didn't find one on my switch housing (which I thought was odd.) Does this style of housing have the pin? Also I have no idea if it routed through the bars or not. Original bars were long gone before I seen them. I'll check the shop manual and see if it indicates anything on that.

Thanks guys gives me a few options. :)

Bracket was dry this morning so popped it in before work....

Have a good day everyone!

I'm glad you had a second go at that igntion bracket. I was really thinking the quality of it the first time was below what you have been doing and are capable of. Looks much better now.

If you decide you don't like the grips I highly recommend the Randakk's Amazing grips. I used them on my CB550 and my '77 Goldwing. They are soft and grippy and look good too.

+2 on the aircraft stripper (for your next project). I had 95% of the paint off of my current project's tank in a couple hours. Use a paint scraper to get the bulk of the paint off then finish off the hard to get at bits with a scrubber pad or course steel wool.

I hope I will be Gary! Although they are calling for snow again for the next three days here. :( No breaks from Old man winter I guess!

IW: I'll take that compliment!  ;D I agree though, first version was very sub par.

Banker, thanks! I'll keep those grips in mind if these ones bother me. :)

We are down to wiring in the new dyno, and the heat demons. Also have to put the connectors on the battery wires. Think we have figured out how my battery will sit in the tray. (Once it's all done I'll post pics of that.) Hoping to get that done by end of this week. Then we fit the rear tire on (spokes still not laced) and take it to the shop. I decided mounting the exhaust there is the best idea as all the tools we'll need in case of broken bolts or anything else that can go wrong will be there. After that finish seat.

SOOOO close now...

Checked the mail this morning and got a suprise! My emblem screws arrived from Jayhawk! Thank you Jayhawk! :)

Opened up the envelope and was like.. hmmm

Taped up all nice inside was my nice little screws... made my day!

Was going to assemble the tank today but got sidetracked at the shop...

It's almost done! My buddy is amazing. Huge amount of work to do this and he makes it look so easy...

The rear will be completely finished up tomorrow. :)

We also finished up the little bits of wiring (connectors for battery and one for ground.) So heat demons next then I can wrap the harness. Measured the front brake to order the steel brake line and discovered I'm missing the joint to mount the caliper to the forks. :( I'm just devastated. I was looking at having the bike on the road next week. Now I'm hunting for a part locally. If not have to try to find it used. I have many swear words for this one. Just crushed. Was such a great and exciting day. Didn't need to end it like this.

I know that feeling well. During my build I lost the rear axle for my K1 only to find it long after I had bought another. Things have a way of turning up after you bought another.lol..........gary

Yes that would be nice. Unfortunately it looks like its gone and questionable if I had it to begin with! My Dad is pulling the caliper off my 73 and sending that to me for a temporary fix but I'm still gonna need that damn bracket! The 73 is complete and my candidite for a restoration so I don't want to strip it! So I'll have the part by tues to get this bike on the road giving me time (and reducing the panic) to get one for the 78.

Thank god for Dads!

Can anyone help with understanding a few things with the electrical?

There is no power running from the solenoid (called the starter relay in the clymers) through the green with red tracer wire to the clutch switch. Is it supposed to have power running through it and if so is it continous or does the switch have to be engaged to make it draw power?

Also in the left switch housing for the turn signals, it shows two wires going from the switches to the turn signals (orange and orange with with tracer; and blue and blue with white tracer.) Do both wires for each side run power or just control the switch? I'm not sure I understand what all the wiring is for.

Sorry if these are dumb questions, but I have never tried working with electrical before and we've ran into some major problems. I have no neutral or oil light indicators and can't get my signal switch working. Trying to eliminate where the problem is and need to understand what runs power and when to do so.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Sounds like you need to start at the key switch and trace power to all feeds. With key in middle pos. trace to fuse box and onward. Turn the kill switch to off so you don't cook the points.  The diode will pass electricity one way, so check both sides. What you are looking for is where the 12 volts is and where it is not. Follow the schematic from the key switch to the fuse box and then down each leg of power.

Thanks Vin! We have replaced the fuse box already and put in blade fuses, as mine was being funky. Figured out the problem with the oil and neutral light. I switched  the ground and power! DUH. LOL

Just gotta fix that and finish figuring out the switch housing (probably suffering from the same issue. LOL)

We discovered one of the wires from a diode is corroded so we are replacing the whole thing tonight. Also burnt out my clutch switch cause it shorted when we tried to power up the bike. :( Got an ad up, but if anyone has one that they would like to part with let me know please!

We have full power! Everything is working except my burnt out clutch switch! :) Heated grips aren't working out so well, but that's not major. I can just get a new set and put them in with the proper switch. So, wrap the wiring and moving on! I feel better.
