Bill

The gist of what the man said was something like the solder makes the wire rigid and heat make it brittle and they break, then if you have shrink wrapped the connection it holds it and you start getting intermittent operation.  Which will drive you nuts trying to find it?  I did have some break after being soldered and just trying to remove them from their socket? They did seem a little brittle.  The original no solder way that Honda did it seems to be more flexible and the solder makes them rigid.

He also talked about using relays as they tend to subject to vibrations and shocks like hitting a pot hole or something causing the points to bounce.  I'm still going to try and use them as it doesn't seem to bother autos I have had them in and they get bounced too.  Just saying.

I guess there are a lot of ways to look at things, the no solder way seems to allow for easier disassembly but who knows!bill

Your right Bill, who really knows.  Are you getting a load of snow your way? Our East  area is getting clobbered!  Were finally getting some rain here in Sunny Northern California.  Unfortunately even if we have a good snow pack this year we still will be in drought conditions next year, that would be only about 1/3 of what we need to get back to normal. But I degress.

Catching up with the last few days,   Last Sunday the 16th I was hooking up the throttle and clutch cables.  When attempting to insert the engine end in the clutch housing it would not go in.  The powder guys missed plugging it up and I missed correcting while the part was off the bike, of course I didn't know I had a problem at that time.  So how to fix this without having to take the cover off again?  Hence the first picture, you might have thought to yourself "what is that contraption on the drill?" What I finally ended up with was attaching a Lexan drill bit to an old extension I had in order to thread it through the area to the hole, quite tight.  I hadn't used the extension in years so the two, the name escapes me, you know like just the threaded piece with an hex indentation on the top to screw down to hold the shank of the bit.  Both were long gone, so the search went on for something with the correct thread and not to long.  Found a machine screw with the right thread but was too long to clear the sides of the engine. After lots of grinding, cleaning and getting the threads working right I finally manage to slip the puppy in there and cut out the powder coat enough for the clutch cable to set in there properly.

Monday and Tuesday had some work.  I decided while working on the clutch I didn't like the bulging oil lines and began to correct them.  Had to remove the oil tank which was a great pain but even worse to put it back in after shortening the length of the lines.  But as luck would have it now they were both too short, Arrrrgggg
So out it all came again, shortened the long one to the correct length for the short one and luckly had enough of the line left on the shelf to make  a 1 inch longer long one and back in she goes. I think it was well worth the effort to get it right, third times the charm!  Alas while cutting one of the lines to length with my die grinder with a cut off blade managed to put I nice nick in my good thumb. the rest of the week was work and when I was able to get to the shop began to wire the AMP water-proof connecter for the seat side of the taillight/turn/stop signals.  While checking out the bike side I already had done one of the wires fell out, crap, you cant imagine how hard those tiny connections are to get out once in.  I had bought a tool made to do it, plastic of course and it busted in the first effort to get it out, that's $2.50 in the loo.  While fixing that wire ANOTHER wire came out, so had to fix it! Did I tell you how tiny those things were.  Anyway got back to where I was when I started to wire the other one which I will wait a couple of days to do just to keep my sanity.

Well winter is here with a BANG! Temps have dropped near freezing, hope I got enough antifreeze in the boat engine this year?  Well guys be safe out there, have a great Thanksgiving!

Well that was 2009, its just wet now and we will take all the wet we can get!  Hope your having a great weekend. I was cleaning old rusty tools.  Used Evapo-Rust, works good and wont kill you, enviro everything, puts that gel stuff out of business. About time too that stuff never worked that well for me and it burned like hell.  You can wash your hands with this stuff.  Just finished the waterproof plug for the tail light in the seat and after some adjustment all the lic light, brake, signals and tail light work from the headlight.  Its spiffy but I don't think it will hold up in the long run, just too fragile. Good for now!  Off to dinner, I'm bringing Merlot tonight!

Was just there in LA Friday night to pick up my Jeep.  I kept thinking (and often saying), "I could really get used to this weather".  Which is also what I think pretty much every time I'm out there in Southern California.  You guys really do have it nice out there....weather and the views.

This is a Bosch connector very waterproof.  Ill be running the Alternator 3 yellows, 1 black, 1 white, d. blue/red (oil pressure switch), Lt. Green/Red (neutral safety switch), through it.  I likely will not be able to use the mount but wont know until I get it done if it will work or not.  14 pins to wire, have done 3 only eleven to go. The pins are quite small but the engineering is very good.   Dam work keeps getting in the way. Now holidays bahh Humbug! So I work on it when I can, wish I could get on a roll and git er done!!!

Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving

That's right!  My woman had been saving for 10 years to buy me for Christmas a, wait for it- ; ;)"bright-red, hunch-back, warp-speed 900cc cafe racer" :D  The next day I took it out for my first ride in over 10 years, wait for it,  8)I headed East and couldn't stop!  Just kept going and somewhere around April things just went blank some where in New York City- "NEW YOUR CITY" and I have no memory of anything until I woke up on a beach in a shack down in the Keys next to a with a dusky blond named  Stella!  :o I have no recollection where the "bright-red, hunch-back, warp-speed 900cc cafe racer" went?  Got a feeling I pretty much wrapped up my bucket list.  Now I'm back and ready to wrap up the "no color, flat chested, warp-speed 836cc café racer" !

Good to here from ya Don and Bill, I'll follow up on your strings to see what you have been up too.

Gregory

Just farting around, trying to get some chuckles out of you motorheads!  It is me, after my triple heart bypass back 2005. I'm now 40 pounds lighter and have outlived my father that dropped dead at his desk at 62, I'm now 67 and have 5 years on him and going strong.

Re; Tsunami, I burned a wire on a Ricks regulator/rectifier and am unsure as how to test it?  Any ideas out there?  The other issue is my GripAce switching system. I the way this thing works is it has 4 micro switches on an oblong pad that is in a milled spot on the bottom of my clutch side hand grip.  It has 6 functions, left turn, horn, right turn, hi/lo headlight and starter.  They can be set to operate most anything. From the switches to the controller in the headlight is a two wire, then the controller sends it out to everything on the bike.  Anyway I was getting the headlight wired when I switched a connection and the controller started to smoke.  Not wanting to beat a dead horse I shipped the controller back to the company, They tested and fixed what ever was needed and shipped it back to me including a new switch pad.  Not wanting to pull the old pad out yet as it was very difficult to run with all the wiring in the handle bars.  So I'm setting up the new pad of which I'm half way done.  If all goes well I will start switching out the old wires one at a time to see if anything is wrong, if not I'm ready to go on the switches, if so I will know for sure and which system was damaged. Complicated but am girding my loins to get determined to finish the job.  I also have met someone who may be able to give me some help next week

After that is tightening everything up and get her started and see if I have a bike.

Sounds like you sent switched power to the input side of the controller. The motogadget m-unit is similar to this device, and all the "inputs" take only ground inputs. The output side is all switched 12v provided by the m-unit. Mistakenly wire power into the left side, and lo and behold smoke! Now the m-unit has internal circuitry and fault prevention so the unit can withstand these types of mistakes, if not too severe (ask me why I know this  :-[ )

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
