Finally, Got the new plate.  Two days and 4 trips to the DMV. OUCH! Got notice that the plate was in, went down with paperwork but DMV would not assign to bike as it was non-op so I said fine lets op it and bring the registration current so I can get the new plate. NOPE cannot du without having insurance.  Ok Fine went home signed up for insurance.  Came back the next day, wait got another fellow who says well yes you have insurance but there is nothing in this policy I got offline to indicate what it was for.  Ok fine, get name and fax # of fellow, go outside call insurance company, now Im sitting in an un air conditioned car, too noisy for the cell phone wait through 3 people, get it all straightened out, go back in. Ok Fine but must pay a $14 fee as well, ok fine, nope cannot take it here have to go next door to an insurance firm and have them take the money???? Ok Fine went next door, they understood no problem we will just bring it up on the old computer, go to DMV site, nope DMV site says it is not needed no $14 fee required. So take it all back to DMC fellow confers with two supervisors who say have to mail it all in!  Hmmmm???? Ok fine. Mind you every time I have to go to the window I have to wait upwards an hour or more.  So off I go home bewildered as can be.  Read up on the three different methods and decided to Call the powers to be.  Reached central call center in Fresno, lady says what I and the insurance guy know, don't need the $14 deal, just pay the $81 regs. fees, give them the proof of insurance and the old plate!  Said I tried but no go.  She goes to super, super calls other super in the DMV branch, puts in the fix!  Go back to branch, get it almost complete, have plate in hand when this knucklehead reads the fine print on the proof of insurance and the Vin # reads CM750xxxxxxx instead of CB750xxxxxxx, typo?  Told the guy to man up and get this settled, he looked around and whispered-oops missed it, see ya- poof Im gone.  Anyway I have a new Avatar, so you wont have to look at my lovely face anymore.
Nice plate. I just picked up my new plate for my next project CB750K2.

Thanks for the notes Bill and "CB750 Cafe Racer Fan"!  Not complaining but work has kept me busy for a change so haven't had much time for the bike or the site.  I am mocking up parts at the moment.  Found out I had a senior moment when I ordered my GL1000 fork SuperBrace.  With a 78 750 and 77GL1000 front end, well I ordered for a 78 GL1000, wrong! When I figured it out I call the folks at SuperBrace and they were great about exchanging it. I just paid the difference in the parts as the correct one was more expensive, of course.  Well it looks great and Ill get some pictures up when I can.  I decided to keep my CB750 gauges and update them with new face gauges, touched up the dials, run back the speedo, swapped out the lenses for some domed ones, repainted the top cases and held them together with some "JokerMachine" Brackets.  The Cb750 mount bolts are wider than the GL1000 even though the GL forks are wider than the CB.  So I decided to build my own mount.  I picked up a piece of Alum. plate for 8 bucks, used the CB mount as a template for the rest of the holes and figured out the rest of it in my head.  I cut the big piece out with a die grinder cutter along with some of the larger pieces.  Then used files and misc. shop tools to get the shape to something not too bad, not perfect but once everything is mounted the differences are negligible. Polished it up and wa-la home made mount for a GL1000 front end using CB750 Gauges! Next?

Decided to run down and shoot a few quick snaps so you can see what I was talking about.  Also received my senior bars and mirror from Omars Dirt Track Racing, Check him out Robert has some decent stuff, great guy. I like the way this mirror can fold up out of the way or be adjusted.  Also started mocking up the tail light with the sequential turn signals.  All lights on this beast will be LED.  So things move slowly.  Also a shot of my boat trailer, I'm up to about 70-75% done.  Too many irons in the fire!  Stay well my friends

Just curious as to why you went with the Superbrace fork brace versus Tarozzi or Telefix or others.  Come to think of it, I'm not sure if Tarozzi has one available for the 76-78 GL1000.  Fast from the Past only sells one for a 1979 GL1000 (http://www.fastfromthepast.com/servlet/the-509/Fork-Brace-Honda-GL1000K3/Detail).   Telefix costs the same or less than Superbrace.

Design-wise, it looks similar to a Tarozzi and Telefix, by clamping onto the tops of the fork legs.  Are there any advantages or disadvantages comparing this to other fork braces??  I was just wondering, since it is $100 more expensive than Tarozzi's comparable products.

I am swapping my CB750K front to a 76 GL1000 front, so I'd love to hear how yours works out!

Sorry Guys too have not replied sooner, I'm not getting notices that someone has wrote in?  Any body know why this might be?

Re. Brace, I choose the Super because of Randakk's recommendations.  I gleaned a lot from his site felt he know what he was doing. I was not too impressed with others I saw. But I would imagine would work as well over all.

I hadn't been able to find an aftermarket triple trees for the gl. I think there was one but was not set up for some of the stock stuff so decided to polish the orig.. I will however track down some info on that fellow you talked about.  If he has a site could you pass it on?  Thanks.  Still mocking up parts for fitment and glad that I am before I paint much, getting just a little wiser in my old age. Thanks again for looking.  Seems like we should have a meet up next year for all the 77/78 guys, hell any SOHC's and toss back a few!

Tsunami,

You, me and a bunch of others would like to see an aftermarket set of triple trees for the GL!!

I was all set to go with having Rob (Voxonda) mill some beautiful light-weight trees (just like the ones he makes for the CB750 - http://www.voxonda.com/2010/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=36&category_id=8&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=54) to replace the ugly and less robost stock trees.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to reach him.  If he comes out of the wood-work, I would be excited to use his.  I think his design will improve the stability of the front end.

Tsunami,

Your build is coming along nicely.

I have a couple of questions as to your Lester wheels.  Are they "stock" sizes (19" front, 18" rear), both 18" or 18" front, 17" rear?  Are they "Honda" specific models, or did you adapt Lesters for another bike?  If the latter, how?

What did you end up doing as to their finish?  Are they just stripped and polished or did you anodize or plate them?  They look great!

Re: the Lesters, they are bike specific, but 19 front and 18 rear, I don't think they had a 17" but I wanted the 18 for the look.  Actually they are just stripped at the moment, I'm going to polish the two flat edges.  The center and spokes are a rough finish so don't think they will polish well.  Still tossed as to what to do with them.  As I decided not to murder my bike (all black)  seems most everyone wants that look.  So am going with lots of bling.  I may chrome paint the center and spokes.  Found a really good system (I hope) to do so.

Fitment was no problem what so every, just the same as stock, also the GL1000 swap went well also including the fitment to the Lesters of the duel disks.

I have worked engines on every jerry rigged stand I can think of but decided for $40 it was money well spent.  It has simplified many tasks.  If I decide this is the last 750 I will build I will likely recover a good portion of the cost.  I bet it will be down the road in a New York minute! Re this build Citi Bank Loves me! If you get my drift.  Thanks for the interest guys.

Thanks CBCRF, still need to finish the Cam part of the head, Machinist didn't return my dowels for the cam bases. The people who sold me the polished stainless socket heads kit, well it was lacking a few.  So I'm taking the opportunity to go through everything and place orders again for what's lacking while I wait for the Dowels. The head cover is just there for looks at the moment so I could get an idea of what it might look like in the frame.  Were in a heat wave, as you likely know down south at least you may be near the beach. I think we just peaked out at 106! Its supposed to get worst in the coming days.  At least when I work in the shop I'm sweating off weight. LOL

It's been Egypt-hot down in SoCal.  Low 90's but humid today.

Well still trying to get the top end done.  CycleX failed to send back the studs for the cam bearings, found 2 on ebay, finally had to beg cycle x to send me a couple, Cost me $10 to get two of the 4 they should have sent back.  This evening learned they failed to return my oil control orifice's as well and in the process of getting the towers on I broke one of my studs.  Arrrgh  Maybe I will take up stamp collecting.  From what I read the two orifices are a required item and no one has them so Im off on another search, anybody got a couple laying around?

Finally solved the Cam Bearing Stud issue, The engine build gods are really testing me.

I have a problem, though I might be able to get your take on it?  Also anyone reading this who has been there done that could be helpful.  My 836cc engine  build has gotten to the cam timing stage.    Usually the cam is indexed with a square notch and sometimes also with the two lines.  The notch should be up and if it has lines, they would be even with the cam bearing mount.  Well the aftermarket cam has no lines, it has a notch but when the #1 cyl is at top dead Center the notch is on the bottom not the top?  I must be missing something.  I know about the degreeing process however my talk with the machinist  when I was purchasing this equipment was something like this.  I'm not replacing the cam chain as I did not want to split the cases, the bike ran fine.  When I told him that he kind of laughed and said I wouldn't need the adjustable Cam Sprocket (which I already had) or the degree wheel.  I should just follow the normal reassembly process.  I assume the cam should be in the position where there is no rise or fall of the rockers when it is the notch is down? Anybody, any Help?

Thanks Gregory

Hey Gregory,

I'm sorry.  I have never degreed a cam.  I'm sure that someone, like Doctor Dave (1975 Supersport, performance cafe), Mike Rieck or a host of others who have done this can and will chime in.

Still following with interest!

Thanks Racer Fan,
I queried Hondaman and he graciously set me straight on my problem.  I amaze myself on how much I have forgotten over the last 35 years! Ouch.  But what was old is new again and that's why I'm doing this.  So maybe this engine will be buttoned up, finally, soon.  I can get back to the rest of the bike, my boat and oh yes work!

This is just a quick reply, had my hands full of late.  Finally finished the cam installation.  Long story short 4 days of learning to degree a cam only to find out WebCams failed to put the hole and threading for the end cam thrust washer and bolt, god knows what else is wrong with it.  Ken is really pissed as he should be and graciously will replace the cam and take the matter to WebCams his manufacturer.  So the junk is off to Wisconsin, engine is buttoned up until the replacement cam comes in.  Meanwhile Ive begun building a mount in the Razor back seat to fit the Taillight and will be fairing in the taillight exterior to blend with the light itself.  My boat trailer is restored and the boat is back on it. Still working out the kinks in the dash wireing.  I put 10 gal of super in the boat today and tomorrow will attempt to start and tune this monster. Stay tuned!
