You have a good point about the Lithium Ion battery.  They have so much more cranking power than a lead or gel battery.  Perfect for my cold-hearted 550 that makes me crank away to start her.

Two steps forward one step back.  Tapped the frame and bolted on the mount for the cooler,  seems a lot bigger without the front end on and the frame still black.

Remounted the exhaust to learn the CycleX 4-2-1 need no stock mounting parts.  The use just their mounts at the head and either I did not screw down the exhaust stud's far enough or I need shorter studs as the nuts stop at the thread run out and have not drawn the pipes down to the gasket.  Hopefully just need to turn down those studs some more.

Built up a bracket for the other end to hold the back end.  Works good not so sure about the looks.  Still has to be polished.  I rolled the end under for a small mount for the Guardian bell.  The more I look at it the less I like the looks.  I'm thinking of trying to reverse the clamp, shorten the length to the top of the pipe and use a narrower piece of bar.  Worth a try, there's so little area to bolt something on?

Well that's it for today.

Well I just wasn't happy with the way the first bracket looked, so I made another which I think I might go with. What do you think?

Is there a clean area along the lower frame rail, forward of the pegs, that would provide a location for the muffler hangar? Where it is, makes that are look awfully clustered.

If you put that bracket behind the rear set mount and on the other side of the clamp on the muffler and painted the bracket black you would barely see it....

Thanks for the reply guys, cant really go forward and cant go behind the rear set mounting brackets.  They have to set flat against the frame holes.  Even if you try to place a spacer on the other hole two things happen, first the bolt you would have to place the spacer on is short on threads on the other side which is why the manufacturer tapped the other side as the nut barely fits on and will be eliminated in the finally assy. If you could do that you then run into having the brake pivot arm itself pushed into the brake pedal.  For the time being I'm going with this set up.

Figured out I will have to put spacers on the outside of the CycleX exhaust pipe joints in order for them to be able to pull down the pipe enough to seal the pipe to the head, other wise the nuts would bottom out on that unthreaded part of the stud and they would not seal.  Had the studs been threaded all the way it wouldn't be an issue and they are down as far as they will go safely.

Just a bit of an update. I ran into a detour when I determined there was no easy way to get my master brake line to clear the Top forks that were raised to lower the front end.  I bit the bullet and tore the front end down again to cut down the springs and build her back up again, which I have done and it really does look better. I took some time to research my problem with my 1977 Century Arabian 16.5 feet with a 233hp 351W Mercruser engine.  Last fall I had just about got her (Classic Glass) running, was able to start but stopped when ign was back to run position.  I had upgraded the ignition system to a digital Pertronix dist with a Pertronix Flame Thrower Coil.  The old system required a ballast wire to cut the run voltage down for the old point system.  Have found out the new system does not require the ballast wire and needs a full 12v at the plus coil.  So as soon as I can de winterize the engine when there is little hope of a freeze I hope to have it ready to go this year. Started this in 2008, long story.  As I had been frustrated with the bike build and needed some distance I took up undoing my upholstery on the rear/engine cover that is sort of a sun deck.  When I did it the first time I over did the foam and didn't cut the wood cover base large enough, it would fit but it was tight.  I had to set up a hot wire to cut 2" of depth off, not an easy task but worked it out.  Two of Three are done.  When that mess is cleaned up I will be back to the bike.  I'm going to alter the kick stand to accept a custom chrome stand that turned out to be too long when I lowered the bike.  I was going to sell it rather than cut it up but think I can alter the mount to more of an angle, thus kicking out he arm to the correct height.  Then its measure for the front brake hose's.  Had to work out a couple of glitch's with the disks and caliper's   Oh, I have plumed the hidden wires for the bar end turn signals and the hidden grip switch's and a kill switch which will be mounted in the top center of the handle bars between the risers.  I'll begin the task of finding places for all the moved electrical parts, mount them and connect the wiring and test before final tear down for welding and paint.  Trying not to get ahead of myself so as to not make any more foul ups, wishful thinking I know but it helps to keep them to a minimum.  Some where in there find the time and money for Upholstery for the seat.

I thought of something the other day and want to give a shout out to you younger guys.  These bikes are 40+ years old and as you can see they are disappearing before our eyes.  There are so many being parted out rather than saved it occurred to me that you 20-30 something's tack on another thirty years these "1st Superbikes" will be as rare as hens teeth.  Mark my works those 20 to thirty + years will come faster than you think!  My advice?  Hang on to as many you can.  With bikes looking so much alike, like cars do, these SOHC'ers will be prized possessions and your sons will thank you for doing so.  Just a thought, get'em while there hot and sock them away.

Well been in tinker mode of late.  I may have noted that the cyclex exhaust flange's were not thick enough to be able to tighten the nuts all the way down, they would bottom out on that blank space in the middle of the stud.  So did some research and came up with some 5/16" I.d x 3/8" thick x 5/8" o.d. chrome spacers which I ordered and received today.  As usual these suppliers seem to want to send you what they have rather than what you order. I received 11/32 x 3/8 x 5/8 spacers?  ya, only 1/16 of an inch, but that could be important! Not so much in this instance but I still wrote them back for the correct ones, knuckle heads!  Any way a pic of that.

Learned something interesting over the last couple of days.  I have had a nice heavy duty kick stand that I had picked up on flea bay but since I lowered the bike its too long.  I thought maybe I could alter the mount to allow the stand to kick out more but cutting and heating the mount would not move.  Not wanting to mess up the new stand so I can resell it I went back to the original stand that worked perfectly with the lowered bike where as at stock height it looks like it will fall over.  Someone had welded on a huge nail for them to use it better I presume and it had that mount for the rubber baby buggy bumper on it too.  It was cruddy and looked not to cool.  I decided to cut off all the non essential material an smooth out some of the casting material that Honda didn't have time to and lo and behold it began to shine?  I not a metallurgist but it seems to be stainless steel.  I kept sanding, filing and getting anal buffing on it and though not perfect I think it looks really decent from a bling standpoint.  Wa La.  I'll be selling the other one that has killer chrome on it soon, give a holler if your interested

That's a nice, deep garage, Greg!  I have to squeeze fit our two cars and one of my bikes into ours.  Jealous!

Oh yeah, and the polished up modded kickstand looks good, too!  ;D

Thanks Don, our cars don't have the luxury of being inside and a couple of years ago I had to build a 10x16 shed to hold all the stuff that would be filling the garage.  Of course that's the only time it snowed since we moved here in 2008.  The pictures with the bike in them are old ones that I placed in here to show the larger side stand on the frame to show it does fit the bracket.

I told my better half that the house we eventually buy needs to have enough garage space for our cars and my bikes.  That might mean a lift or an expansion built onto it.  I'm sick of having to rotate bikes out of a storage space.

I understand that, hard to believe at one point in my life, the second time I came back to California, I lived out of a Chevy Van and the back room of a motorcycle shop that had been a toilet. Beyond the bike is the back door to the motorcycle shop. Second is the shop front as it looked in 2011, 709 Pacific Ave, Santa Cruz California.  Lots of good times in the back of that joint.  In fact, although a lot of time and 2 marriages in between, I now live with the gal who shared those good times in there with me and used to drive over from the Bay area to go riding with me in the early 70's.

No that was the my first cafe' racer.  The read one on page1.  It was nearly new, the story was there were two, his and his wife's.  They were moving and were tying down the bikes.  What he screwed up was not disconnecting the battery, second When he did so one of the straps came across the top of the cigarette lighter he had installed on the bike. Then he threw those big heavy moving blankets they used to have on top. and took off down the road with the moving van.  Apparently it got hotter and hotter, the blankets acting like an oven which melted anything that was not metal, and discolored a lot that was metal.  So I got it cheap on an insurance deal.  I scored the Tracy fiberglass body/tank/fender on a trade.  I decided to go the radical route of all white frame, wheels, fenders, pipes ect to cover the discoloration.  Blacked out the engine as well.  Not many bikes with the one color theme then.   I had the spokes chromed and the nipples brass plated.  Engine was bored out to 400 something, cant recall. That metal flake really popped in the California sun!

It must have been a serious pain to keep the white wheels and hubs clean.

Surprisingly no, of course it wasn't something you would want to drive long distance on or in the winter.  Hard part was getting café parts, most came from japan wasn't a big market for it at the time for those bikes.  Was hard to keep the black engine from fading, no powder coat then.  Well finally getting some warmer weather.  I need to get my boat done I'm so close so I'm taking it out of mothballs tomorrow and get r done! Did you take any good rides this weekend?

Oh, I been looking for alternative/repurposed oil tank.  Queried a guy selling this on e  bay and got the measurements.

Tank is 8 inches wide, 6-1/2" inches tall by four inches thick !! Magnum Cycle -- CHROME PLATED "XLCH" SPORTSTER OEM "OIL TANK" with DIPSTICK for 1970 - 1978

Might give it a measure before I start on the boat!

I got the 750 out for a good haul on Saturday and Sunday. I rode over the port bridges, through Palos Verdes and past Venice. She pulls links a freight train. I must admit that it makes my 550 seem anemic in comparison.

Greg,

I know you had an oil tank mocked up.  A very similar version is now being produced by Cognitomoto.com
In addition, one of the forum members is using a Mooneyes oil tank (cylindrical shape).

Yes I'm getting critical, woke up yesterday morning dreaming of my first start up and putt around the cul du sac.  Don I know just about exactly the route you took, I can see it in my minds eye as it all flashes by. Good for you Don, some day, some day.

"754" Old Timer, glad to see your still with us and thanks for the tip I will check it out, I did some measuring this morning and I don't think the 8x6.5x4 will work, close though.

Don, yes I have exchanged emails with Devin on that very subject.  He is whom I got my rear set brackets from and he does nice work. I was really hoping to use AN fittings for the look, They should work if I get them made to size.  He explained to use AN fittings would be costly as its all included in his pricing and that they are bulky if using 1/2" lines.  I think is price is right on for his product.  I haven't ruled it out yet.  But I tried my mock up in there again today and I really like it. I need to do more research on the parts pricing and what a welder might need to finish it up and that cost.  Yes the mooneyes tank is a work of art, Carpy is going to be doing a Pill tank but its not ready for production yet.  All in all I'm not keen on round tanks, there is an oval one that being flatter is more appealing to me.
Hey you all, why do we need a throttle push cable when the pull cable seems to work just fine on its own?????

Pics-

What the exhaust spacers with flange nuts look like.
Pretty much got the stock tank stripped.
