CB650 oil cooler on a CB750A?
« on: March 20, 2013, 04:54:10 AM »
I know this a shot in the dark but does anybody know if the factory oil cooler on a 1983 CB650 Nighthawk will bolt up to a CB750A. It's not much to go on but, the main o-ring that seal the filter housing to the motor is the same and the o-ring around the center filter bolt is the same.

1978 CB750A (upgrading very, very slowly)

Past bikes - Honda: SL350, CX650C, CB900C, CB1000C, CM450A; Kawasaki: several 1972 750 H2's; Suzuki: TC90J.

Bikes I want: CX650ED, a mid-sized japanese V-twin with ABS.

Got it!
Looks like I'll be going with the Cycle-X adaptor, but really don't care for the looks of the spin on oil filter.
Anything elst out there?

The answer is "mostly" no.  The "front end" of the lower case half is the same as the CB750 (non auto) - meaning that the "general" forum has the answers.

This topic has been thoroughly discussed on this site:

My own plan was two-fold:

  • Use a 77/78 750F Honda cooler (not much of a cooler - but better than zero); coupled with
  • another oil cooler plumbed into the converter's oil drain line.

I had bought another converter cover to modify, and it all seems workable - but I hesitate some - not knowing how much "back pressure" the converter drain line could tolerate before the converter oil flow becomes an issue.  I still may go there someday.  I had thought about routing the oil lines from the converter over the motor/below the fuel tank.  Anyway - this latter idea may never happen.

If I were to jump today, I recommend Terry (from Australia's) oil cooler adapter.  My recommendation is based on design - the placement of the to/from oil line fittings - and the size - appear to be larger than what I've seen in other designs.  I wish that I could still use Terry's design with the original Honda oil filter housing, though.
