Hello from Michigan
« on: March 20, 2013, 05:44:33 AM »
Hello, I am new to the forums and bike restoration.  One of my buddy's father had an nice 1977 CB550F he was looking to part with, though it has been sitting for a while, it looks very good and I cannot wait to tear into it.

So I am hear to get ideas, learn and just have fun with other people doing the same thing.

I am definately going to hit both of those.  Still waiting for the bike, my friends parents are in Flordia untill second week of April.  That is when my fun begins and I can stop looking and planning and just do.  I cannot wait.  I will definately take lot of pictures and document the progress as the transformation occurs.

Very excited.  I am going with my buddy to pick up the bike Saturday from his dad's house.  Found out the bike has been sitting in his garage / pull barn for 10 years. It is a bit dusty but I cannot wait to get it home and tear in to it.

While I do have faith in my mechanical abilities to a degree, does anyone have any recommendations for a Lansing, Michigan area repair shops?   Never know, sometimes it is always good to have someplace to contact for help if the crap does hit the fan, or this turns into I am unable to get away from work and need some extra assistance. (Have to use the mandatory OT money somewhere right?) Hoping in either case it does not come to that but like I said it is good to have something on file.

Josh

There's College Bike Shop downtown lansing http://www.collegebikeshop.com/
Hammer in Hand in St. Johns http://www.hammerinhandcycles.com/  (custom shop, but if you look through there pics they did a cb750 cafe, these are good guys)
I think the name of the place is Ken's Automotive, on Hartel in Grand Ledge.  A few years ago I sold them some Yamaha parts and say thier shop, they have a sperate old bike outfit.

Keep in mind I havenot had any work done by any of these places.    I would stay away from Full Throttle, heard bad stories about those guys.  Groves in Mason might be good, a co-worker bought a GSXR from them and has all the maitenance done by them.

For parts, there's http://www.slickssalvage.com/ Slicks in Mason, but hey are pricey.

Enjoy

Welcome from Texas.  When you get the bike, first start by cleaning it up and checking certain items.
Look in the tank, shine a good flashlight in there. Rust? After 10 years should be dry, hopefully no old gas.
You'll need a battery.
That should get you started....

Great to see another MI bike on the road. I'm planning on making my first trip to Filmore this year, assuming the bike is up and riding...
