Awesome ..... or Turd in the Punchbowl (Hydro Coating)
« on: March 22, 2013, 04:42:55 PM »
Well I'm sorta being a test bed, new shop opened next door to our shop and he does powder, paint and this new stuff , Hydro coating , so I agreed gladly to advertise for the guy and I am pretty well pleased,(got some dents fixed too) also had the headlight bucket done in carbon fiber look. The Skull design is just growing on me , need to do my front fender , which I will soon , just a #$%* to take off. I've also had my V&H header powder coated and extremely pleased with that job, it is done in hi-temp black with silver metalflake, subtle but in light it pops! I cut that huge hatefull canister down and am not yet through with riveting and the proper bolts.
So what say ye , yay or nay ? Thanks Gents
Found this bike in completely stock condition in Feb. 08. Paid over twice what my new one cost 30 years ago. Am trying to re-create the look of the late 70's Drag Bike styling.More later. 4-2-10 It ain't stock any more and I have no idea what I am trying to create !

Remember the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the late 70's?  I say no, no, no...it's just awful.  At least there is no portrait of Pol Pot on the fuel door. :P  Really...that's the first thing that came to mind when I saw that. :(

Apocalyse or Terminator movie...  definitely macabre

Don't think I would saddle up to that scheme ever.

Aside from the skulls, which are bound to be polarizing, wow on the tech! How does that work exactly?

Looks like nice handiwork, and a nice custom bike!

Now, you will hear from my (weaker) artistic side:
IMO...if you made some matching (to the colors) white or silver or maybe black 'stripes' in the wedge shaped edges of the ridge down the center sides of the tank, and thinner ones on the rear, each side, top and bottom of the creases back there, I think it would have a pleasing effect?

I used to do these sorts of things with the plastic/vinyl shelf paper (cheap, durable), which can be slightly stretched to follow the contours. These days, when someone asks me to paint their tanks and such in a solid color, I usually make some stripes like these for them to consider, to break up the "solid field" look of it. Never saw someone turn them down, yet. These are large fuel tanks, so the "color blocked" look seems to sometimes detract from the nice handiwork.

...now we return to my Engineering mindset... :)

Oh Boy do I remember Cambodia, as a young Airman in 1974 one of my more memorable life moments was flying over the Mekong near Stung Treng in a small Spotter taking photos and recieving small arms fire ! For some reason these aircraft were bright yellow , anyway we made it almost back into Thailand and the pilot did a great job of putting her down in a clearing very near some very nasty hills, we were picked up immediatly by an army chopper. No injuries except to my pants !

Here is a site with some info, but this is not my neighbors website, pretty interesting stuff, I've had my headlight bucket done in carbon fiber. I'm going to run this for a while and then most likely go to a more traditional look. http://www.texashydrocoating.com/patterns.html

Hello Mark, thank you sir ! I bought that seat pan because it matches the tank lines, I totally agree about changing the pattern or adding contrast stripes, I think this tank and seat will look great in a two tone sometime soon down the road . Now I need to paint the frame and detail the engine !!

George's weak points are motorcycle seats! He just rode in to our shop with no seat pad at all, says he has an imprint of wing nuts on his butt! I'm gonna help him upholster something , he says his jack russell stole the tommy seat !
Hope to see some of you next month around Austin, george is going, I'm riding my K2 Goldie that george and I just rebuilt the top end !

I think if the tank and seat graphics were burried under some layers of a mid to dark Kandy and a few coats of clear it would be near the awesome stage, it's a bit to "loud" for my tastes on a vintage bike. The quality level of it all is pretty damn good. Kandy would tone it down most of the time and when in the right light or up close the skulls will jump out still.

I just watched a few youtube clips on this. This would be a good idea if you could print your own graphics. It does not look like you get much of a variety in choice. Camo and Sculls, thats all I saw.
Yep, i have issues with this sort of stuff.

George,  Sorry man but one vote here for "turd in the punch bowl'.  Maybe if you
broke up some of it with black accents?  Definitely eye catching.  Stickman
