You can't pull cover unless the frame has been modified

That's what I thought. After reviewing the thread Jerry didn't say it could be removed he said lifted.  Thanks for your help.

I was able to take a good look at the surfaces tonight with good light.  The valve cover has three tiny marks on the edge where the leak was.  I wonder if this could have anything to do with the leak.  I would like to think the gasket would seal around that especially since they are on the inside edge.  Unless anyone can tell me why not to, I am going to take a jewelers file and remove the lips of the dings to get a smooth surface.  I ordered an OEM gasket today and was thinking about using a thin layer of Permatex 2 on each side to get a good seal.

Yes to removing any raised edge...........but no further.  The Cycle-X kit gasket is OK by me but the improved Cycle-X gasket they sell is thicker and DOES NOT LEAK.  I have tried the gasket replacement with lifted cover.........cumbersome but can be accomplished...........but not with the thicker Cycle-X gasket - its too stiff.

I went ahead and filed the dings out.  I took another look at the gasket and am pretty sure it was the culprit.  I can clearly see where the indentation from the head slides off the back edge providing zero gasket material between the head and valve cover.

Harsh, I think you were right to pull the engine.  I have changed valve cover gaskets with the motor in the frame and it requires so much mucking and mangling about that by the time everything was back together, the new gasket leaked worse than the old one.  I actually ended up removing motor mounts and rotating engine forward still in the frame.  This was all done before I was a member of this great source of info...
