Prepping cases for paint ?'s
« on: March 23, 2013, 08:07:05 AM »
So I have a couple motors to assemble here shortly.

Motor 1 (should be ready in th enext week or two)

Leftovers from my 550/650 740CC build.  Most of the paint is intact on the cases but top end had been stripped.  I have some spots with white corrosion on the cases.  I was planning on some LIGHT wire wheeling followed by some wet/dry paper and a general scrubbing of the external surfaces of the case with some barkeepers friend followed with a thorough rinse (prob my dishwasher again) and then a wipe down with some lacquer thinner.

I had a friend put some self etch primer on a watercooled motor and then paint over that and the primer held up great (cheap paint flaked off from fuel/solvents hitting it though)  I have a can of PJ1 Case Black laying around I was planning to rattle on it for a topcoat.

Motor 2 (will be ready in a couple months for this)

This is the 740cc stroked and poked motor.  Everything is getting glass beaded clean on this one.  Should I start with a etch primer here also to really grip the AL or just go with a topcoat product?

When assembling cases shoudl I tape around the case split so I can wipe off any sealer that comes out?  Or should I just wait to paint until after I join the cases together?
