have it dangling free behind all the electronics due to the genius that is P.O.

if anyone can tell me where it is meant to be attached that would be awesome! same place as negative battery ground?

CheerS!

there is often an unused female spade connector with a green wire spare,it can be used on some flasher units.

thanks for you reply Dave i appreciate it!

it's a black "O" type connector that looks like it should be grounded to the frame somewhere and has several green ground wires spliced into it. I'll take a picture tomorrow if that doesn't sound too obvious

Cheers

yeah photos help,it mightve been altered by someone?,if it is an earth wire just ground it to the frame.

Remember that the black wires on these bikes are switched power and the green is the ground ;D.

ok so here are the pics, is it supposed to ground to the frame?

its the wire I'm holding in the first pic (obviously reg/rec unit is not attached)

2nd pic is to give a better idea of where it goes, its the thicker black wire that comes from the bottom right of the frame and is spliced into the greens and brown(i think brown) in the yellow insulation.

thanks for taking a look!

its a hack job, trace it back and see where it goes, check it for voltage aswell.

Greens are all grounds but that brown did not ought to connect to a green

Yeah, I would get a wiring diagram and a good look at an already correct setup.  I'm sure you can find pics of both on here.  Then get it back to the way it should be.  Try and solder the connections and use heat shrink tubing;  butt connecters just make things messy looking IMO.

As for the blinkers, the relay should be two wires going straight into the relay, neither coming off the frame, gray and black, going into the headlight bucket (there will be an unused green as well).  The blinkers themselves should be grounded to the forkears simply by their stems on the front; and the rear should each have a green wire somewhere on their stems for grounding which plug in under the seat along with the orange and sky blues.

thanks a bunch for your help so far guys, I totally agree that I want to verify back to stock in the future but right now I want to get it ridable and running very well, then next would be electro clean up, then aesthetic stuff

so I traced the mystery brown up towards the headlight cluster and found this genius peace of engineering (disconnected as shown) - (first picture "wires 1")

so it does appear that the brown connects up to the grounds coming from almost all front located lights, blinkers, speedo light, tacho light.
the second picture ("wires 2") shows them splitting off into the headlight, I traced most of them and they are coming from blinkers grounds etc.

would this have caused charging problems? I guess if the blinkers ground straight into their holders that explains why they still work, high beam little blue light has been working fine, speedo and tacho night lights have not.

should I solder this up, ground the end near the reg/ rec assembly, reconnect a new reg rec and see if the charging problems are solved?

if your riding the bike in stop start traffic a lot you will have charging problems running the headlight,if you have a multimeter check the charging rate at the battery at say 3000+ rpm with the headlight on then off,you need 13.5 to about 14 volts all the time, when its idling it wont charge much if at all,if the battery is old and dodgy get a new one, they form part of the charging and regulator circuit and a dodgy one will upset it all.

Hey dave! thanks for the reply, sorry got my threads mixed up a bit.

the bike currently does not charge on any revs,(small spike of 0.2 V at 500rpm). have gone through numerous entire checklists checking regulator, rectifier, stator etc. everything seems to check out. battery is only 3 months old and is a lithium iron type, pretty sure it's ok.

was hoping the ground wire I'm asking about in this thread connected up to the field coil ground and that was my problem?? so frustrating

the troubleshooting flow chart I went through is here http://www.electrosport.com/technical-resources/diagnosis-center/fault-finding-guide it's the brand of my solid state Reg Rec combo

if the field is working with the key switched on a screwdriver should stick to the cover, when its running and charging it should almost hold a shifter, thats my quick field test.,if the reg was hooked incorrectly it might be cooked and no longer switch the field on?need looking at,,youve checked all the stator etc and you say its all ok,recheck all the connectors, unplug the two field wires under neath in front of the shift lever, the white should have 12 volts with the key on.

Ah ok cool I will definitely go through those steps. unfortunately I did blow up my current regulator/ rectifier unit, smoke n all. so I'll have to wait for a new one to arrive!

thanks for your help!
