Possibly against my better judgement, I just got a '77 CB750A. It's a total mystery; no paperwork, partially disassembled, not sure if the motor is stuck...but I'm pretty excited about it. I've owned, restored and customized dozens of bikes, but this one is different, so I'm looking forward to it.
What it's got going for it:
A well-done hardtail has been added
Seems to be complete
Carbs look clean (haven't taken the bowls off yet)
Spoked wheels (did they all have these?)
I traded a canoe for it
What it's got going against it:
Totally bombed by a flat black rattle can
All the Phillips heads are totally rounded out (in true vintage Honda fashion)
It's apart
No idea if it will run
No paperwork
Probably missing a lot of stuff (hopefully nothing "A"-specific)
I've got big plans of a super-clean chopper with almost no visible controls.
So first questions - what are the 3 splined shafts on the left side? One is beefy and looks like a kick starter (assumed they were e-start only), and the other two look like shifters, but I'm not sure why there are two. I've seen pictures and videos but never noticed there being two shifters.
There's a YouTube video of a guy explaining his Hondamatic that has taught me pretty much all I know about these bikes. Can't post a link though...
