Motul with new rings?
« on: April 07, 2013, 06:20:42 pm »
I'm using a mostly stock CB750 as a race engine.  I've been running Motul 5100 10W40 in the engine for several seasons, with good results.  I'm reassembling it now with new rings and a light cylinder honing.  I've had problems in another kind of race engine trying to seat rings with semi-synthetic oil.  Should I run the engine initially with something else, for ring seating, or will Motul get the job done?

Standard oil for break in.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

I second the motion when it comes to breaking in new rings
use a good petroleum base oil to start with
I am using Brad Penn oil in my new turbo motor
and will continue to use it because its a good oil for plain bearing turbos

When it comes to oil, if not synthetic or an off road/ racing oil, most blends have had the zinc phosphate taken out because of the damage it does to catalytic converters. So buy and additive or use and oil that has the zinc added to it. It's to help older engines that have flat tappet cams and no smog ( converters ).  Search " ZINC " in motor oils.   ;)

udo gietl used to assemble his race engines dry to ensure ring seat

its on those very first seconds till oil gets to them that the honing acts as fine sand paper and makes the rings fit the bore.

and dont baby the motor either

I've done the same for a while now. I still don't like synthetic for first start up.
