My mint K0 airbox, what to do?
« on: March 24, 2013, 06:30:34 AM »
I'm putting back together my 750K0, about to try starting it, and I'm wondering about my pricey air box. I bought this bike last fall, everything was there, completely unmolested. The airbox is mint. My question is, I know these air boxes are scarce as hen's teeth, and nearly as fragile. If I put it back on the bike, is it going to start to crack like crazy? I realize these were made of poor quality plastic.

Your right 70cbkO it is mint, you lucky %^$&@^$. I wish I had one for my KO (using black grooved one) You should be fine using it, just be very careful with it. Use the same care with the airbox as you do the vented KO side covers of the same age and you will be fine.

Thanks dhall. I'm tempted, if I keep this bike, to build a K0 airbox out of a grooved black one. I did that for my other K0. Unless you look pretty close you can't tell.

Based on the one I have -cracked, broken, in pieces - there's a chance it could crack I would say. And, the first crack will be like the first door chip in your new car. If you're worried perhaps use the repop from here http://lpmreplicaparts.com/honda/CB750K0/airbox.html and save your original. Cliff.

If I was making a trailer showbike or selling for big bucks I would install it. Think if I was making a rider I would mothball it and go with a repop or shave a ribbed one.

That's the same thing I'm thinking ekpent. I think I'll put it on, get the bike running, and if I sell it I'll leave it on. Otherwise, mothball it.

Here's what the bike looked like when I got it. Only thing missing is the seat trim! oh, and mirrors.

I would consider getting new airbox rubbers so you don't have to put as much force through the airbox fighting to get stiff intake rubbers on the carbs.

Could you tell me the build date on that beautiful bike please? My K0 came to me in far far far worse shape and I'm curious what is "correct" for it. Thanks, Cliff.

Depending on what shape it is in now...my KO box is all OEM and I had it painted candy ruby red with the rest of the bike. No cracks and I do not expect any. Remember when you put it back on the bike you do the top half first and get that on the intakes. Last is the bottom half.

Dec '69. I'm pretty sure nothing has really been touched on this one. Single-cut fender, not double cut. There's a bunch of sandcast/diecast changeover things I dont' really know about. There's switch differences, gauge things, stuff like that.

Thanks! Mine is a 12/69 too but I think it should have been a parts bike however I did get it kind of free, I just had to go get it. Even the frame was bent, many K2+ parts. I think it was in a very bad crash. It's coming along but will never be like yours. Good find!!

Appreciate the comment. That is my bike. My son married a photographer last year and they did a photo shoot of my bikes last October. My KO is a 1-70 build. I really like the candy blue /green most of all. Only reason I went with the ruby red is this was my first 750 and wanted to keep it how it was when it was born. I hear ya' regarding the KO carbs. They do come off pretty easy one once you been in there a few times. Took me a bit to dial them in. In fact, I got so frustrated at one time I was going to remove them and put on a set of K1 carbs. Just could not bring myself to do it. Had to keep it stock and glad I did.

Well, because it's a nearly impossible part to find, and is subject to cracking, it might be more suited to a collector or rarely driven bike, than a daily rider. I mostly wondered if anyone has any idea if it will be susceptible to cracking, or if all the old broken ones are broke because of people not taking care of them.

To have if/when (gasp!) he had to sell it one day.  Every original item missing off a K0 potentially reduces the value.

Because they get very brittle, the plastic was not the right kind to be around gas and vibration to begin with apparently and would be a shame to have it break either being handled or on the bike. Keep it and use a repop, no will know it's not original unless you tell them you're using a repop.
They can fall to pieces.

Correct me if I am wrong guys...isn't the KO airbox the one with the rubber seal between the inner plate and the upper half? Been a while since I had mine off.

It is part #11 on the parts fische. You have to go to the 1969 parts fische to find it. I think they deteriorated and guys never replaced them.

Roger that! I'm about to paint my K2 in that color, 'cuz it was what I always wanted, and couldn't get. :(

I've now received 3 sets of K0 carbs in the last year for rebuilds (1 from a sandcast), and 2 of them had 130 jets in them (!). That's mighty rich. Honda used 120 with the needle clips in the middle position, these have the 130 with the needles lifted ANOTHER notch. In all the years I worked on them, never saw so many over-jetted K0 sets before (?). Most of the time, we were installing 115 jets to try to reduce the plug fouling problems, or lowering the needles to the 2nd notch, and drilled the emulsifiers out to as much as .044" to let them get "blown out" on the freeway on-ramps a little easier.

One of the things that really aggravated the airbox deterioration was: the boxes were made from styrene plastic-based material, the inside of which was sprayed with a matte 'sealer' of some kind. The spitback from the carbs, once the plugs started fouling, would wet the intake tracts all the way into the box, wetting the paper in the air filter sometimes. The strong fumes then dissolved this matte finish, leaving a soft, powdery material on the surface that would wipe off with your fingers, and it collected on the air filters and clogged them. After that, the inner surface would start etching and then crack, usually starting between the velocity stacks of the 2 inner cylinders.
