Hope you had a good Memorial Day weekend...

Still needs tires, brakes, carbs removed and cleaned, fuel pump(seeping a bit) adjust valves, coolant tank(leaks a little) I was off last week but was busy around the house so nothing got done on the GW. Motorcycle $$ parts fund is a little low right now also. I want to get it on the road ASAP, but got to get myself motivated to spend some time working on it. Be wanting to ride my other Honda's more than turning wrenches on the Wing right now. That never happens to anybody eles does it ::)

Thanks for the compliments, guys.  I found this Goldwing about 4 blocks from where I lived 6 years ago with a for sale sign on it for $150.  It only had 6K on the clock, but had sat outside under a tarp unused for 15 years.  Even though there was hardly any surface rust or corrosion the elements had taken it's toll on the engine.  It came with a Windjammer fairing and complete Samsonite touring set, bags and trunk (which I kept).  I tried to start it up, and although it fired an ran, it sounded like a gravel truck.  I took the heads off and discovered a bent valve, and very rusty cylinders.  I'm thinking maybe the bent valve was why it got parked so many years before.  I pulled the engine, found a low mileage one with 16k on it off eBay, did the valves, carbs, timing belts, hoses, calipers, master cylinders, brake pads, everything.  All new cables, tires, shocks, fork springs.  The exhaust was real clean, thankfully.  I sand blasted the wheels, fenders and all the chrome parts and painted them black.  I also painted the engine before re-installing it in the frame.  The frame was completely smoothed and molded in before re-painting it.  The headlight is from a '35 Ford, and the tail light is a former Honda Mini-Trail 50 head light with a red-tinted lens.  It was black originally so I repainted it that color with the addition of the scallops and pin striping.  I lowered the forks in the triple clamps a bit so it sets level, threw on a set of superbike bars and it now handles excellent.  A really fun bike.  Smooth, quiet.  I wanted to build what I thought Honda might've if they had done a Super Sport version of the Goldwing.  Here's a few pics of what it looked like.

That is a sweet 77 mate, well done! I hope my 77 naked will look as nice as that when it's done. Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Thanks, Terry.  I'll look forward to seeing your's, too.  The first gen. 'wings really are cool bikes.  I've always wanted to find one, strip all the chrome gee-gaws and touring equipment, and ride it the way it was meant to be..naked...the bike, not me.. ;D

That's what I thought when I got my Wing, that I would lose the Vetter and maybe install a Road King style shield.

But then a took a couple 400 mile trips with the fairing in place and I am sold.

My 550 project will be the around town naked bike and the GL will be the full dress tourer it was born to be.

Actually they were born naked ;) , the touring version was later.  I remember assembling the first GW to come to our shop back in 75(it was Riff's Cycle Center in Langhorne, Pa).   It was a thrill taking it up to the ton...Larry

I, too, was working at a Honda dealership when the first Goldwing arrived in '75.  We were all road racing types back then, but we were all blown away (considering how large, at the time, it was) at how well the Goldwing handled and how fast it felt at the time.  It was so whisper quiet, it was a little disturbing.   It hit the ton so deceptively and smoothly.  Mine still feels that way.  It'll stick on 90mph very contently all day long if you wanted.  70mph is a very lazy pace for one.

Just cause you were born naked doesn't mean you were meant to stay that way.

I do love the look of an original naked GL1000. But functionally, the bike just blossoms when you add the fairing and bags and hit the highway.

Can't argue with you, Danny.  They make great touring bikes, and having the room to pack yer stuff and protected from the elements makes them very accomodating, for sure.  Being fully loaded and even two up, they aren't affected at all.  Really fine road machines even to this day.  ;)

G'Day Paul, yeah mate, that's the old "Made in the USA" engine out of my '86 Interstate. I've been hanging around the Naked Goldwing forum and the guys there have confirmed that the 1200 into 1000 conversion is do-able, so that'll be my Spring project.

'Wing engines are really hard to find over here and the 1200 wasn't imported by Honda, so I'll have to rebuild the one I have, which is in pretty bad condition, judging by the metal in the oil.

I do like the idea of the extra 200cc's, overdrive transmission and automatic valve adjustment too, and I'm gonna install different carbs and exhaust, but otherwise leave it looking mostly standard. Cheers, Terry. ;D

Over the years I never gave the Goldwing(any year) much more than even a second look. The CB750 was the bike that I was crazy about(still am) I wasn't into the long, long distance touring that GW's are made for and honestly I thought the fairings, bags and all the plastic made them bulky and ugly and even though they had 2 wheels I looked at them more like a car than a motorcycle.
It's amazing what a couple of months can do and now I catch myself checking out the Wings when I see them on the road. I still favor the lean and mean early models over the dressed up models however. I like MoMo's idea just have two, a naked one a dressed up one ;) or like Terry says a winter Wang and a summer Wang.

The first three years were actually made to compete head on with the Z1. But that's not what happened. The buyers started hanging luggage and fairings on them and going cross country. So Honda "re-purposed" the GL1000 in '78 with engine characteristics more suitable to long haul touring with a full load. When you get your '77 engine and suspension sorted, you'd be amazed at the bikes you can spank in the twisties with that Wing.

The GL1000 was really intended to be a superbike and not a tourer. The early bikes used hotter cams to develop power higher on the rev range.

But it quickly became apparent to the public and to Honda that the Wing's talents were really on the open road and so the later bikes were retuned for better low end torque.

Even with 150+ lbs more weight, the fairing and the bags my Wing will leave a stock SOHC750 for dead.

I gave mine a nice clean and shine over the weekend and adjusted my headset bearings to deal with some head shake and overall poor feeling from the front end.
