Sold my '83 yesterday ("eighty tree" as Spanner1 calls it) for $2k. Sorry to see it go but looking forward to my next project.

I can drive 12 miles and be in VA and drive 45 miles and be in NC. So driving to another state can be easy from my current location...  KY is less than 100 miles away.  Some of the NorthEastern states you would measure saddle time rather than miles as traffic density (and population density) makes travel there much more frustrating and dangerous.  That Wing with the Lesters looks nicely kept. Should be a good buy for someone.

I have seen that, truly an amazing rider.  Just think though,  a barge fully loaded with Wangs and other bikes from the US would make you one very wealthy Aussie-and that'd be very  8) 8) 8)....Larry

Yeah mate, it is a great deal, but the shipping and taxes/duties etc is the killer, and would severely eat into any profit. I was looking for some more 'Wang parts on ebay last night and one seller has several GL1200's going real cheap, I'm amazed at how little they go for, for what they are, but I guess the benefit of having a population of 320 million in the US, vs 23 million here means there are a lot more bikes around going cheap. I'm going to take a look at a first year gold wing for sale.  At least I hope it's a first year.  Can anyone post a link to the vin/engine guide to see the serial range for the first year gl1000.  Does the engine and frame vin match or is there a large spread like on the cb750?

1975 K0 The frame serial number began GL1-1000012 while the engine serial number began GL1E-1000001.
1976 The frame serial number began GL1-2001483 while the engine serial number began GL1E-2001422.

Good luck Prospect. The early naked Wangs are really nice bikes. I think all the other GW owners here will agree ;D Be sure to take some pics. The frame and engine vin just like the 750's won't match. On my 77 the last 3 of the frame vin is 169 and the eng vin is 208.

Before getting my 1977 GL1000 , just like you I was wanted a original first year Wing naked if possible. Thought I had found one had less than 30k on the dial but had fairing and bags added. The frame vin was correct for a 75 model year but after closer inspection the engine vin showed to that of a 77 model bike. That took the wind out of my sails and I let this bike pass by. Shortly after this I found my naked all original 77 with less than 10k. Sometime it pays to be patience.

Thanks for the info.  Exactly what I was looking for. I remember when you were looking for the bike and found one with an incorrect year engine.  I too would have passed.

I've always had a soft spot for the gold wing even though I have never ridden one.  Around here they are very cheap and not sought after.  Far cheaper than a cb750 which has become the chouice of the hipsters/cafe crowd.  It will be hard to sell it eventually. 


I still have to see the bike but from what I hear it was parked 4 years ago and now it won't start.  Typical story.  Price is right. 

These days I'm shying away from projects but rather bikes that just need a bit of work to get back on the road.  I found what I rewally like to work on is engines, electrics and carbs.  Not the rest.

The carbs are a pain in the ass to work on, but parts are easy to get (you can buy the timing belts and thermostat at any auto parts store) and it has a robust owners community. Once you ride a properly tuned one you will understand why the GoldWing model name is going strong after almost 40 years.
