Start up, may be first since 1976 (CB750K0)
« on: March 24, 2013, 08:39:13 AM »
In the next week or so I think I'll attempt a start-up. I'm not sure, but it was last plated in 76. what i can see of the motor, it's in near mint shape. I drained the oil, it was in good shape. Someone may have changed it recently. it's not seized, turns over nicely.
Question.....should I spray something in the spark plug holes? A bit of oil? WD40?
I plan on filling the oil, as per some suggestions (maybe Hondaman? ) said, put 2 quarts in the tank, let 1 quart run in thru the tappet adjusting holes. Then turn it over with the plugs out and make sure the oil pressure light goes out.

Any other snippets of advice?
Thanks in advance, John.

That's funny,my recent K0 purchase also came with a 1976 plate still attached. The first thing I did was to pull the plugs and start a little oil/penetrant soak in the cylinders before turning it over much.

Pour some marvel oil into the plug holes and let it soak the rings for a few days. Put a rag over the plug holes when you blow it out by using the starter. Then fire her up. The Marvel is thicker than PB or WD 40. It is thinner than motor oil so it will get down to the rings. When you hit the starter the cylinder walls will not be dry.

All that I would advise has been mentioned.  Best of luck John.  Try and film it.

Make sure you drain the sump as well as the tank. If it's sat that long I expect some of the oil will have leaked down. Filling the tank with fresh oil in that condition leads to a surprising (and messy) overflow of the tank when the scavenger pump sends the sump oil back to the tank. I found that out the wrong way.
It's also worth dropping the carb bowls to check what's going on in there, again a surprising and messy overflow is common when putting fuel into long unused carbs, but this time it's very flammable. If the PO left fuel in the bowls 37 years ago it's turned to glue by now at the least. This doesn't ruin the carbs but needs to be cleaned out. Leaving fuel in the tank and the petcock on ends up evaporating all the fuel in the tank inside the carb bowls into corrosive muck, that usually destroys them by eating the alloy parts inside the bowl: jet supports and float support towers.
New float valve sets will almost certainly be needed to eliminate carb overflows.

Thanks everyone. Yes I drained all the oil. The carbs were a disaster. Varnish everywhere, and yes, I've got them all cleaned out, that was a big job. I had to use a heat gun to get the slides out of the carbs.
