Piston Damage Question?
« on: March 24, 2013, 08:23:22 PM »
Hello,
I am in the process of changing my head gaskets and noticed a small scratch on my #3 piston.

The cylinder head does not have any visible damage so I have a feeling the piston was scratched durring disassembly.

Will this be an issue if I put it back together?

What should I do? Can I buy a new piston or a used one?

Am I going to have to send the heads out to be board out?

please help.

Ryan

Check closely with a magnifier, and verify that no metal is sticking UP from the surface. If it is just a groove DOWN into the surface, it will be fine. If it is raised above, then take a brand-new, very sharp blade (like a non-China razor blade: Chinese ones are not stropped smooth...) and gently shave the raised edges off. Then gently "sand" it smooth with 400 to 800 grit emery paper, and clean well.

You'll want to replace those rings, though, and hone your bores. Re-using old rings seldom works out very well. If you have my book, the process is outlined step-by-step in there.
